Wow really? I've heard the opposite lately. May have to give it a shot.

Why did you ditch Vipre? I've recently heard good things about it.

    Cheers.

Yes it really does run well on my systems. I have it on 3 different computers since it was a 3 user license. All are x64 Windows 7, one is a dual core laptop, another an I7 laptop and also my 6 core Phenom desktop. So two machine that have alot of resources and one laptop with only modest resources but still runs fine and light.

Also Kaspersky has an ongoing sale for the 2012 suite 3 user license right now, if you stack on a coupon code you can get a few more bucks off too.

I loved Vipre and ran it for the past 3 years on many of my systems. I was a very early adaptor to it and I think it is a great product still. The reason I dropped it from my systems was due to the fact that Vipre got bought out by another company GFI, awhile back and now they have no more upgrade pricing for existing users at all. Which means no loyalty at all to their customers. Basically if you want to renew a license it is the same cost as buying it all over again. I never heard of such nonsense froma software company before. Then I found out that vmware is doing the same greedy thing with their Fusion product. So to all the greedy accountants that are ruining the companies they work for, I have developed my own policy. It is plain and simple NO UPGRADE PRICING ON YOUR PRODUCTS = NO CUSTOMER.
There is no one company or one product that is so great a customer doesn't matter and will contiune to hand over the $ no matter how they are treated. What really makes me laugh is how bad thee economy is today and with so many players in the security software market, how can they possibly think this strategy is going to work?

So that is what happened with me leaving Vipre. I can say that is probably the only thing they could ever have done to make me ditch them. So I did.

Funny thing is even though I always felt Kaspersky was a very good product, I wouldn't have given it a second look because I was so pleased with Vipre for years. But now that they forced me away, I guess they don't need customers anymore, I have found Kaspersky to be a truly terrific change for me. Maybe I got lucky with te timing of their new 2012 release being so good at the time I was looking for a new product. I basically narrowed down my two choices to either Avira or Kaspersky and trialed both before I decided to buy. Both worked great for me but the interface on the KIS 2012 was more preferable to me. Although the Avira ran very light as well.

Kaspersky has a trial license you can get too if your interested in trying it out. Just make sure you clean out any existing AV first.

Won a KIS key from the recent giveaway by Softpedia!

KIS is running good on my Win7 32 bit system(AMD quad core). Glad to be back onboard with Kaspersky because I believe it offers the best protection in the business with minimal fuss.

    Good day.

Thanks Ed for the very detailed explanation for the switch. Makes a lot of sense and I agree, that is a poor model for Vipre to be taking.

    Good luck with KIS.

    Cheers!

build 374 is the same build when KIS was released
why are there no new builds?
has kaspersky lab stopped development of new program builds?

Running a Full Scan after installation will make it faster as the on-access scanner won't check files that have already been scanned lately.

Enabling "Concede resources to other applications" in Settings -> Miscellaneous (the toolbox icon on top right) -> Compatibility should make scans less heavy, although I don't know if it affects real-time protection. All heuristics etc. options obviously affect performance aswell, although those also affect protection.

This covers it pretty well: http://forum.kasperskyclub.com/index.php?showtopic=7393&st=0 While it's for 2011, most of those (excluding the edits at the bottom) apply for 2012 aswell. If you aren't bothered by pop-ups/HIPS, following the "for advanced users" guide will make KIS throw pop-ups for unknown executables' actions instead of deciding automatically what to allow and what to block (depending on whether heuristics see them as dangerous or not), which like HIPS usually is a pretty effective way of blocking malware.

When following the guide, note that settings have been divided into 4 categories (Protection/on-demand scanning/updater/miscellaneous) in 2012 which wasn't done previously, so if an option isn't available in one category, it should be available on another.

They just likely see that build .374 is good and stable enough for using and have no need for releasing a new build.

Actually at this point it is 12.0.0.374 a.b.c.d.e.f.g so not the same. Patch g was just released. They said they would not increment the version number for 2012, just add the patches. Running very well here with the latest g patch.

I find the "Concede resources" to be counter intuitive. Enabling it for me slows things down and always has. Probably why it is disabled by default. I leave it that way in any case.

    Patch G has been released:

    1. Firefox 8 support (WTB и VK)
    2. After patch E some users has problem with active threats in main window that can't be processed
    3. Slowly opening Main Window
    4. Some other fix
    5. Mail clients (Outlook) freeze on receiving mails with big attachment (>10Mb)

It's not the same build, it has patches, for example it is now at build 12.0.0.374(a.b.c.d.e.f.g) They used to release just a few patches for each minor version and then release a new minor version. I don't know why they changed that now.

Do the KIS patches come through auto update or do you have to download them from the K site??

Yes, its from the beta forum, as you can see there's also a Russian character in there :D Since it's released, there is now a support article in the tech database with the full changelog:
The patch G eliminates the following problems:

    * Some interface problems of Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 version 12.0.0.374.
    * Problem of updating the program databases.
    * Error concerning display of the license validity period after adding an additional activation code
    * Error concerning display of the number of remaining days and the license expiry date.
    * Error concerning display of detected and eliminated threats in the Security problems list
    * Problems concerning Anti-Banner, Virtual Keyboard and Kaspersky URL Advisor display in Mozilla Firefox 8.
    * Problem of the “Key file is corrupted” error during the program activation has been eliminated.
    * Problem concerning “hanging” of MS Office Outlook 2007 during scan of large archives (larger than 30 Mb) embedded into mail messages by the Anti-Spam component.

Yes, it comes through auto-update and installs automatically and invisibly during the next reboot.

I know. I'm over there too. I've been a user on and off since v4. That was a looong time ago.

Yep. It should have come yesterday. If anybody didn't get it try a manual update. Make sure Firefox is not running so it will properly update the addons.

Ok one more thing, how to make Kaspersky update as fast as possible? its just so slow :(

around 150kbs, Norton was updating with like 3000kb/s on my 50MB connection.

EDIT: Also another one, ISwift/iCheker technology, what are this 2?

Thanks, got it. It was a long time coming. Seems to be running fine so far. I hope in the future they are able to find a way to keep up with the pace of Firefox updates. I'm sure the new release schedule is a nightmare for a lot of developers.

im surprised kaspersky hasnt released a new build yet. Dont think ive seen one build with so many patches. a new build will decrease the amount a user needs to download after installing.

They aren't going to this year. Patches only. However the latest installer from their site includes patches a through g. It is just over 100 MB. Downloaded it a day or 2 ago when I switched back to KIS. Again.
