    Its not too bad. INstalled it without a hitch on VM. The only thing I dislike about it so far is that when some malware is encountered, there is no option to ignore or quarentine, only clean. Also a scan is then performed after the file is cleaned. Makes testing a lot of malware tedious. I had 4 scans going at once. I do like the detection rate though. It was very quick in alerting to threats. Not too bad all in all.

    I had problems installing the beta of 2012, and have not tested the final yet.

    After reading the cnet.com review, I think I will pass on it. The overall review was 4 stars, but I don't like the negatives.

    It doesn't have web protection without the Ask toolbar, something almost all free competitors offer. It lacks behavior-based detection, another thing most free competitors offer. Installation seems to be fast or a nightmare according to users here. It still has a nagging ad, and it has no file caching. Come on..

    Does anyone have any idea if AVIRA 2012 caches scanned files so it doesn't re-scan them over and over again? I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere and i haven't seen any settings related to this either.

    The guard does not seem to rescan the same file, but it only lasts until you reboot.

    According to the Cnet review linked above;
    "...However, the new Avira still does not whitelist known safe files on your system, so repeated scans will check out the same file, even if it's got a hash that indicates that it's been unchanged since the last scan...".
    So, if I understand correctly, Avira apparantly creates hashes of scanned clean files but does not make use of them (over a reboot)? Sounds strange imo...

    Who says that calculating a hash is faster than scanning for a virus? The tricks used to speedup a second scan are a little different. Keep in mind that for calculating a hash you need to read the entire file! I don't think this is an important fact anyway.
    What is more important gets visible when you uninstall the Guard (long time ago there was even a document for a setup.inf file used for silent un/install - hope this is at least protected somehow or doesn't work with a modifying installation) and disable Windows Defender and the Windows Firewall. The Avira status is then "Your computer is secure. All services are working correctly", "PC Protection" is green and "Internet Protection" is green while the PC in real is totally without any protection. Seems as if the Internet Protection within AntiVirus Free is always "green". At least I found no way to get its status changed. A simple Eicar isn't catched within a system that is marked secure!

    Problem only on my computer? (no time to verify), bug? (can't believe that such one can pass any QA process) or intended behaviour? (after ask.com another ...)?

    If they fixed the installation I'm sure it would be good. I was picky since it lacks web scanning and a behavior blocker in the free version, but independent results do show it with a high detection rate...

    Actually it's not a bad review, he says that detection is often user dependent in terms of allowing or denying, given the fact Avira still doesn't have cloud analyses the user should deny anything from suspicious origins. On demand detection was good as usual from Avira. Languy's conclusion is that Avira should improve its 0 day detection, an area where Norton for example excels with sonar and other technology. Let's see how long it'll take for Avira to introduce some kind of cloud technology.
