Indeed it does. It can be initialised manually as follows:

Windows 7 even tells you what this command does.

Well, PuranDefrag does work at boot time, but defrags all files, and not only those locked (like $MFT) during normal operation.

I use MyDefrag (old JKDefrag). I only defrag data drives though when I hear a lot of disk seeking, maybe a couple times a year.

I have tried many, but never really see much difference, but can "hear" a difference for sure. There was a great defrag shootout at one point, which is why I tried JKDefrag. I like its interface, and feel it does a fast job, maybe faster than others, maybe not.

Bottom line is, according to many many tests by both "professionals" and every day geeks, is that defrag is not going to gain you very much at all in way of speeds. My ear tells me though that a defrag on a data drive stops so much seeking back and forth, whatever that really means is anyones guess.

Puran Defrag boot time defrag helps to defrag files locked by AV like Kaspersky.

I use the boot time defrag from Puran Defrag in my C:\ partition, and Auslogics Disk Defrag in my (very large) data partition - Auslogics is extremely fast!

This is just the thread I was looking for. :D

I gave quick reading to the thread, and I don't think my doubt has been asked. That said, I've tried to run Windows 7 built-in defragger in Safe Mode, but nothing happens.

This afternoon I researched a bit, and I've seen a some website/blog - I don't recall which one - mentioning that it does. So, I tried again, but I don't see any process related to Windows 7 defragger running, at all. Nor do I see the disk working, besides normal work.

Does it really work in Safe Mode? :doubt:

UltraDefrag have just released the first release candidate for version 5.0. It supports boot time defrag, which can be customised via the boot time script (excluding certain file types etc). I've been testing it for the last few versions and am finally happy enough to keep it on as my defragmenter of choice.

    Hi,

I tried defrag with Puran Defrag and I haven't noticed any improvement in computer performance after a boot defragmentation with my Vista 32 bits. It seems that my boot up is slowler now.

After this boot defragmentation, I decided to check again with Puran Defrag doing a normal defrag, and I was astonished that the scan was go on as the first time with the same speed. I hoped that this second defrag will be quickly, but this was not the case, the same speed time as you begin to defrag. It sounds strange for me.

Have you noticed something similar ?

you will be slower the first few reboots this is due to the free space it creates which windows will them fill with the boot / important files it usually takes 3-5 reboots to see the faster speeds. also do not use piozor when doing a boot defrag imo.

Thanks zfactor for your advise !

Unfortunately, I used PIOZR and fill gaps in 'additional options'. In which case, do you use Piozr ?

use fill gaps but not piozr on boot time and only use piozr maybe once a month or less depending on how often you defrag during normal defrags

Is there a "danger" using PIZOR? I read somewhere before online to avoid it but don't remember why.

According to you, do you think I need to do a new boot defrag without piozr ?

pizor reorganizes your files where a normal defrag will not. i would run one but when pizor moved your files a normal defrag will not always re-organize them again it will defrag them and move directories free space then fill gaps. pizor is kind of like perfectdisk's way of organizing where it moves the most used files to the edge of the disc.

i would probably run normal defrag without it then a boot time again without it. and after a few reboots you will start to see the free space gap at the start of the drive mostly filled in this is when you should start to see the faster start up or be back to normal.

On the opposite way, I began with a boot defrag with piozr and then, after rebooting, I choose a normal defrag.

I understand that piozr is wellcome after a few boots defrag, not before !

    Thanks !

no problem i have been using puran since prior to version 6 and have asked their tech support MANY questions so if i can help just let me know. to add with puran it does not just defrag system files on boot time defrag it defrags the whole drive unlike most others that just do system files during boot time defrag. this is why i always recc running it the second time during boot time this way most files are already defragged and it will have little work normally to do during boot time mainly just system files and by doing it after a normal defrag you have made the free space and on boot time it will then move most system files to that empty area which is normally the fastest part of the drive. hope that also helps! and yes just i do not recc to use pizor and all defrags as i said maybe once a month or longer depending on how often you run it. i run mine once a week and i only use pizor every 2 months myself.

Do you need to exclude the (System Volume Information) folder during boot time defrag, with any defragmentor, to avoid messing up restore points? I don't use system restore myself but rely on backup images.
