I've actually made a mistake as I misunderstood the title: my Vista boots in 45 seconds and reboots in 80. I find it hard to believe that some systems can reboot in 10 seconds!

    Hello,

Since the measurement is for reboot time and not boot time, I just downloaded the script that was provided. Interestingly, I had to briefly turn off my HOSTS File as it was blocking the download (I run MVPS.org Hosts File, hpHosts Hosts File, and SpyBot Immunization). I ran the test with my stopwatch running. It took 166 seconds to reboot according to the script, but it took 4.5 minutes by the time the CPU gauge on 7 Sidebar dropped from 100% to the normal 15-20% according to my stopwatch. So my mileage varied.

    Regards,

    Nathan

    Hi there,

166 seconds reboot is perhaps still too long, but considering you are running 2 AVs (Norton and MSE from memory) it is okay after all. What I find unacceptable is the CPU running 15-20% that is not 'normal' as you say, an idle system should have the CPU running 1-3%. Your CPU was for 4.5 minutes at 100% !?, that alone is a strong sign of conflicting software, and even with all the stuff on your desktop 20% CPU is too much IMO. I would strongly advise you to uninstall one AV, you'll see an enormous increase in speed booting up and with normal operations.

    Hello,

Thanks for the reply. I've attached a screen shot of Process Explorer which shows the top 20% or so, followed by some of the higher level idle processes. It's by Windows Sysinternals, and a bit more detailed than the built-in Task Manager.

    Regards,

    Nathan

Do you need Windows Search and all those other stuff?

What's your hardware specs? I'm using more security programs with less resource usage...

    Hello,

Well, I uninstalled Google Desktop a couple of weeks ago when I found out that Google would no longer be supporting it. So I do need to have Windows Search enabled. My hardware specs are here:

    http://www.nathanproia.com/home/computer/

It's an older gaming rig, but it runs at 3.00GHz.

    Regards,

    Nathan

    Hi Nathan,
Just took a look at your homepage, noticed that you're using System Mechanic Pro and followed the link to their site. On the product page it states the program incorporates real-time AV & anti-spyware. Is that correct? If it is, and I read the article correctly that would mean you would be using three real-time products simultaneously. I could have misunderstood though.

    Hello,

No, I run just the two anti-virus applications. Although I have Avanquest Fix-It Utilities 11 Professional and iolo System Mechanic Professional 10.5, I specifically did not install the security and anti-virus functionality of each product.

    Regards,

    Nathan

Well if he does uninstall one, it should be MSE that goes, however I don't think he's going to.

    Hello,

Well, I'm pretty loyal to Microsoft Security Essentials. It's the first program (after the service packs) that I install after a re-format. It protects my system while I download and install all of the software. Norton Security Suite is the last program that I install so that it doesn't get bloated by all of the installation routines. Then I run-test everything to properly configure the Norton firewall. I suppose I could deactivate MSE, but I'm not inspired to.

    Regards,

    Nathan

    P.S.

    Like my new siggy? ;-)

I'm not sure I understand this bloat issue? Could someone explain it?

    Hello,

Norton firewall creates program rules for the applications on your PC. If you install Norton too early, it creates rules for the installation files and the rules list becomes bloated. If you install Norton later, it will only create rules for the application files when they access the Internet. Then you can configure the application rules to your security needs.

    Regards,

    Nathan

Can't Norton be installed with the firewall temporarily disabled?

    Hello,

Well, I could disable the firewall, but I let Microsoft Security Essentials do its job until all of my software is installed. The security suite is the "icing on the cake".

    Hello,

I like some security suites, although I've just encountered a problem with Comodo (non-stealthed ports). MSE is fairly basic, but it does the job and I don't mind having the program running from install to re-format.

    Regards,

    Nathan

That would be an interesting catch phrase:"The new Norton Internet Security Sweet"! Tongue-in-cheek Nathan! No offense to you.

If I've just reformatted the hdd and reinstalled Windows I only turn on Windows firewall (UAC disabled) while I download Service Packs, install everything else, downloading some from internet.

The very last thing I do is install any security software. Windows firewall & the hardware firewall on my router do the job nicely re protection.

Which reminds me. A couple of months back I ran my test rig without any protection installed and Windows firewall disabled. Got an old router out the closet which didn't have a hardware firewall. Then connected myself to the internet and started to do my normal everyday surfing. How many minutes d'yall reckon it took me before being infected and losing complete control of the system?

Managed to get 81 seconds after all those security optimisations.

Forgot to mention Paragon system recovery, which adds a second for me.
