No. I have no need for an AV.

I aspire to not have any realtime apps. Currently one installed but not always activated. I'm just not disciplined enough and would end up infecting myself through sheer negligence (I'd forget to sandbox downloaded files or something)

    Hello,

Yes, I run Norton Security Suite 5.0 from Comcast. I also run Microsoft Security Essentials as a secondary layer of defense.

    Regards,

    Nathan

The last AV I used was MSE, since the day it came out till the day I dropped AV's entirely.

It used to be very impressive and ideally MS is the company that knows best how to secure Windows.

I kind of knew that MSE would be your answer. :thumb:

Still no real time AV . :D
With the exception of trying something new once in a while out of boredom from a rock solid setup. (as rock solid as one can be)

It's always been a dilemma for me whether to run an active guard or not. The good news is that with MBAM and Avira it doesn't take long to to switch from guard to simple scanner, and I concluded that if I'm working with my computers productively the real time protection saves a great deal of time.

If time is not an issue passive scanners are more than adequate along with testing downloads sandboxed.

    Hello,

Yes, I run Norton Security Suite and Microsoft Security Essentials at the same time. It's pretty lean compared to the additional programs that I was running at the same time several months ago: IOBit.com - Malware Fighter Free, LavaSoft.com - Ad-Aware Free Internet Security, and SuperAntiSpyware.com - SUPERAntiSpyware.

    Regards,

    Nathan

    Hello,

My PC is lean for real-time security. I checked the Fix-It PC Startup Analyzer, and security programs aren't even in the top fifteen CPU hogs. Except for the Symantec licensing module and the Ad Muncher process. By far the worst CPU hog is MHN at 16,874 ms. As far as I can tell, it's a media center service.

    Regards,

    Nathan

More like 22,000ms when all three processes are added up.
The acronym stands for Microsoft Multimedia Home Network.
I like Black Viper's description of MHN... "Sounds like this service is a lot of hot air." :D
Since the service startup changed from auto to manual with SP3, if it was me, I'd disable it and see how everything runs without it.
Read more here from BV if you are interested.
