Eset Nod32 AV 5 - Best AV on earth! - but still a beta!?

I am using and testing AVs since 10 years(private and for work, i have to sell avg licences on work :() and i am a big fan of eset nod32 since many years(i bougth licences since years for me and my family), it is fast, secure, and silent.

I tested the version 5 beta, RC and the final. For me version 5 is still a beta, the big evolution ---> HIPS is on beta stage (where are the rules etc) the design of the 5 version confuses me(hard to find an option, it was easier in version 4), cloud protection of eset is not new, it has only another name (ThreatSense is now Live Grid)

Eset 5 has blocked in my tests everything!!! In my opinion the most secure AV since years (better than F-Secure 2011 and Norton 2011) BUT i had many slow downs on my high end system, and i do not know why. I mostly using Opera as a browser but i have huge slow downs with it (2-10s).
For my tests i turned on all advanced heuristics on everything (.exe files) and I turned on the active modes for the browsers.

So for me it is more important to have a non-laggy system, cause i am a gamer, a surfer and mailer/chatter, like the other ~80% of the worldwide PC users.

After using Eset Nod32 5 RC/final for weeks, i returned to Eset Nod32 AV 4, because for me it is faster on gamer settings.

The only thing that i will stay on Eset is the pefect GERMAN Support (DATSEC Data Security e.K, they always answer my emails in less than 24h, awesome!!!) on Eset software and the perfect performance on eset nod32 4 (not 5). Please do something about the performance!

The pros of the version 5 are!!!?:
ESET Live Grid (not new, ThreatSense!?!?) - only marketing, not a real new function
NEW HIPS (still beta, where is the advantage, where is a whitelist like the deep guard from f-secure?)
Gamer-Mode (Gamer-Mode?? i used nod32 since years and i never needed/wanted a gamer mode, this is only for marketing i think. I know the Nod32 gamer.pdf since version 4, i have tested it, but i have not been interrupted with updates or lags in games since years)
Removable Media Control - Lame! only marketing
and Parental Control - Parental Control?! who is using that in real?!
    .....

    Greetings
    Tomsen

adv heuristic on everything ? with Opera, that need many memory ?

    o_O  o_O :thumbd:

with default setting, no big problem here with Opera and old pc, in fact looks to have less lags than you

    Hello,

When I enable Advanced Heuristics in the various place on a default installation of ESET NOD32 Antivirus v5, I receive a dialog saying "Enable Advanced heuristics may have an adverse effect on your computer performance. Are you sure you want to enable Advanced heuristics?". You were able to turn on Advanced Heuristics everywhere and did not see a message like this?

Oh, I also noticed from your system description that it appears the processor is overclocked. If you go back to the stock multiplier and voltages, does that make any difference?

    Regards,

Live Grid has several benefits. If you consider the following just marketing, I'm truly sorry:
    - scan files faster as cache is populated with reputation information from cloud servers gathering information about files from users.
    - minimizes the occurrence of false positives
    - allows ESET to react

It's not beta. Even in automatic mode it protects crucial files from being tampered with by malware. As I wrote elsewhere, HIPS is subject for further improvements and will be updated by module updates.

This is indeed a great feature that many users have expected and now appreciate having it. Updates can have a short temporary effect on system performance, needless to mention subsequent startup scans that do not occur with Gamer mode enabled. Again, not just a marketing feature on paper.

If you don't use it don't call others lame. A lot of our users expected these features and are now happy for having them, especially when they are computer savy and have small children. Again, not a marketing stuff but something that people actually use.

    @piranha
I said i want full security, a full security on zero day maleware for example (not firewall and spamfilter, useless if you have a router with firewall and the windows firewall). And i only got it with maximum settings in my zero malware test. I often testing zero day malware with a virtual machine and if i am using advanced heuristics, the results are better.

    @agoretsky
Yes i got the message, but i think performance should not be a problem with one of the fastest cpu on the market, which so much ram and SSDs.

I will test it next weekend (less time at the moment) without overclocking.

Do you think such lags while browsing only should caused from the high settings?
Or should i use the gaming settings?
Hm, i installed Eset 5 over Eset 4 maybe that could be a problem?!

    @Marcos
Ok i only thought of me, i dont use or need the new things, i only want a fast and secure product, and a bugfree one, easy to handle.
And i did not called anybody lame! I do not want to set rules in hips or something. Believe me, for me Eset nod32 is the best product since years, and a hips is a nice thing, but i think it should be improved (whitelist etc.).
And once again, Gamer mode is a nice thing, but in version 4 you can turn all messages off and updating during gaming was never a problem, cause nod32 handled it so perfectly. Nod32 was always a nearly perfect product, the new options are nice for somebody. Hope you understood my thinking and sorry for the harsh critic.

how many much better and for what power cost ??

may be i am wrong but no need to set adv heur all the time to scan again and again files that are already known clean, heuristic is enough, just need adv heur it for new or modified files. And this is default advanced setting for real-time protection

    Hello,

Advanced heuristics are more processor-intensive than some of the other means used to detect malware, which is why they are enabled by default only for certain operations where additional checking is going to be more beneficial.

Aside from processor frequency (which is important, of course) you also have to look at how many cores are available, and it could be that four cores are still not enough to run with all options enabled in real-time. It is possible that it may be just as important for the workload to be spread across more cores (think dual or quad socket Xeon or Opteron boards) in order to handle the volume of processing required to perform Advanced Heuristic scanning in parallel of everything which is going on. Even if you are only running one application, there are still many operations going on in a multitasking operating environment like Windows that don't appear on the desktop (background programs, drivers and services, etc.).

The overclocking is a guess on my part; we did see some issues when ESET Smart Security v3.0 came out with ESET Personal Firewall on overclocked systems. Certain types of software, such as device drivers, tend to expect regular polling and interrupts, and when those do not get serviced in a predictable fashion, I could see how a problem might occur, like an error from an operation timing out. I cannot say that I have noticed that with V5's Advanced Heuristics module, but, then again, you're the only person I'm aware of who's using that on a CPU overclocked by 800MHz. If nothing else, going back to stock should allow us to rule that out as an issue.

I think it would be a very good idea for you to perform a clean install with V5, instead of the upgrade scenario, just to rule that out as a variable.

    Regards,

    Aryeh Goretsky

Firstly, I apologise for hijacking this thread, but I'm moved to respond.

This is the only point I disagree with. It may well prevent crucial files from being tampered with, but I'm concerned about the somewhat vague '...subject to further improvements...' statement which, in fact, has been repeated several times in the Beta forum and now in here. I'm not here to pick a fight with you Marcos or to discourage others from using NOD32 (I'm a 10 yr + veteran!), but I do feel that HIPS was rushed to market - it makes me uneasy. As you know from my other posts, HIPS stops me from using v5 (I can't solve the problems I'm having and neither, apparently, can you). My choices are simple, and I don't like either of them: go back to v4, or look elsewhere.

So it is weekend an i have time to test my system. I told you that i have some freezes of applications sometime since i have installed the new eset nod32 antivirus 5 version.

So i figured it out, it is the new HIPS engine. o_O

For this test i changed my intel network card to the killer 2100 and installed the network manager. Everytime i want to change the network speed of applications in the killer network manager, i got a freeze for 10-60s, turning hips off restart the computer, i got no freeze. :(
Turning hips on, restart, change the settings in the network ui, again i got the freezes.

Do i have to set rules in HIPS to get rid of the freezes?
Maybe i should log the Hips to see what the problem is?

    1. question:
Is it true you fixed the killer nic problem in the new eset 5.0.94 version?! Cause i tested eset again (cause it is the best solution for me worldwide) and i had no freezes so far. :thumb:

    2.question:
Is it enough protection for me if i use ESETs Gamer settings? (only the files on a list would be scanned)
