I do too, but Norton rebates are pretty easy, and come fast. Usually in about a month.

The Norton 3 Year may be back. But they have not sent the download which they said would be immediate.

Are these people crooks or not?

I used to buy from them quite a bit in the past. It says immediate but it never is. It always came for me though, usually by the next day. The problem I have had is that the keys for the last 3 things I bought from them (Kaspersky, Norton, Nero) were all blacklisted. The Kaspersky was a week from expiration so I let it go. The Nero they refunded me. The Norton key was blacklisted later and Norton gave me a new key after providing them with my purchase information. That's been about a year ago. The stuff I bought from them previously was all fine. In the end I never really lost anything that wasn't refunded/replaced so I guess it's up to you guys to decide whether to buy from them or not.

Are you guys running just the Norton AV, or, the whole Internet Security Suite? Im firing up a virtual machine here and am gonna trial Norton on it here.

    Thanks.

    Hi Trooper,
Most of us are using the full suite, rather than just the av. It is much better to use the full suite as you won't find much difference, even with the full suite in terms of resource usage

    Thanks,
    Ziaul

Definitely the suite. Their firewall is one of the most trouble free I have ever used. I'm sure there are some that are more effective, but not without a LOT more prompting the user. I never see a prompt from the Norton firewall.

    Thanks ziaul and xxJackxx.

My report may not not be great however, since Im just running it on an XP SP3 VM haha. Would love to test on a real world machine but this will have to do.

Now, are default settings ok? Should I tweak anything?

What VM software do you use? I wasn't able to get the NIS 2012 beta to install in an XP VM using Virtualbox. Regarding defaults one you might consider changing is Smart Definitions which downloads a smaller signature database Vs the full database (by turning Smart Defs off). I also turn off the whole Performance Monitoring module since I don't find it useful and it just adds overheard. Be sure to run Live Update manually a few times as there's a version update now as well.

Im just using the free VMware product. VMware® Player 3.1.4 build-385536. Maybe it was an issue with the beta. I downloaded the trial from cnet I think and its working fine.

Will take a peek around the gui to try to find these settings. Im used to some other products and have not touched Norton in years.

Which processes are Norton's? A quick peek and I did not see any. Maybe the name(s) dont stand out. Or do they just use services now?

    Thanks for your help.

In Windows 7 x64 NIS 2012 shows two processes in the task manager - actually the same process twice, which is "ccsvchst.exe*32". Idle memory usage is <10 megs.

Yeah, it might be hard to form a proper opinion on XP. I run it on Windows 7 x64. It uninstalls pretty cleanly if you do try a real machine.

Default settings are good for most. I usually go through the settings and anything that might possibly auto delete files I set to prompt. Under the firewall setting you might have to add machines to "Trust Control" if you want to copy files on your LAN. I find it blocks access otherwise. Beyond that I find it pretty hassle free.

Thank you. Did not realize those were Norton, my have things changed. Mine is using more RAM than yours, maybe its because Im on XP VM and you're on Win 7?

One thing that is annoying is the notification of high memory usage. (Like Firefox) but we all know that's a memory hog anyway. Also insight is cool, but does it have to notify you for every file? I guess this is good for mainstream non tech folks but to me its annoying.

    Hi Trooper,
Default settings is okay, but you should consider changing intelligent skip scanning to off, remove infected compressed file to on and ms office automatic scan to on.

These are few changes which I have made, but it is entirely upto you.

    Thanks,
    Trooper.
