Hmm, I did see the bundle. I suppose it would make more sense to shell out a bit extra and get all the other tools. More stuff to play with

 

That's why I like the modules. There are numerous ways you can modify your image/restore methods. Plenty of playtime.

Your plans may be similar to mine. My test computer has two HDs with the second HD containing images of a few WinXP, a few Win7, a few DOS and Ubuntu. I can restore an OS to the first HD by selecting it in a menu and pressing Enter.

 

That's just what I want. TeraByte here I come!

A note to let you know that I did as you suggested and purchased the bundle. BootIt BM certainly is a powerful piece of kit. I only wish I could use my wireless mouse within its environment.

 

It's BIOS related. Sometimes wireless doesn't work. Instead of using a wired mouse you can do everything from the keyboard but it takes a little practice.

Yeah I've just been looking through the documentation. I don't mind using the keyboard actually, it's probably a good habit to get into.

You might not have looked at this yet. TBOSDT is a fascinating app but frustrating to use until you understand a few basic concepts. It can access partitions that Windows can't access. Here is an example where you copy a Background wallpaper image into the BootIt BM partition. The BootIt BM partition can't be accessed from Windows but TBOSDT can see it. Of course BM needs to be installed and you probably don't have it installed at present. But later.

The Background wallpaper image has to be a .pcx file. These can be created in Photoshop or Irfanview. Let's call it wall.pcx. Copy it to the "win" folder of
TBOSDT. Double click tbosdtw.exe (in the "win" folder). If your OS is Vista or Win7, enter the following line. (Omit all " " from the lines)

"set option locking 2"

(The line can be omitted if your OS is WinXP)

Then enter this line

"list HD 0"

You will see a list of your partitions. Record the ID of the BootIt BM partition. Lets say it is D1. Now mount that partition with a drive number, eg 9:

"mount 9: 0 0xD1"

Now copy wall.pcx to the BootIt BM partition.

"copy wall.pcx 9:"

Close TBOSDT by entering

"exit"

When you boot into BootIt BM go to Settings and add your Background. The Background image will appear behind your Boot Menu.
The same method can be used to access other partitions not seen by Windows. You can copy or delete files, read text files, etc.

At a more serious level TBOSDT can be used to automate restores, to assist in Hardware Independent Restores (HIR), to create virtual machines from a Windows drive, to change drive letters in non booting Windows drives, registry restores, etc.

I do have BootIt BM installed actually so I will do what you said and start getting to know TBOSDT by adding a wallpaper for BM.

Now this something I'm really interested in as I want to be able to restore Windows when my wife or I get a new laptop. I'm really glad I purchased the bundle now

TBOSDT isn't dependent on the application used to restore the image. For example, a HIR with Ghost, Acronis, SP, has to have the image created and restored by the parent app. The job of TBOSDT is to get the non booting Windows OS to boot into Windows. Then you can install hardware drivers at your leisure.

 

Right. I think I understand well enough. I'm still getting my head around TBOSDT but am still having lots of fun with BootIt BM. Installed Linux earlier on a separate partition and am considering installing Windows 98 for a laugh.

P.S. I notice you're in NSW. I'm from Adelaide originally; I moved to the UK five years ago.

 

Although we missed Adelaide we were in SA for the 2002 Solar Eclipse at Ceduna. I'll never forget it. There is an eclipse next year over Cairns. Unfortunately it's during the rainy season.

I tried installing Win98 and received this error during the installation. "Not enough RAM". I'll be interested to hear your experience.

 

Just to let you know Brian that I bit the bullet and did a restore today to see IFW in action. I deliberately wiped my C: drive then restored using the BartPE CD I created using TeraByte's plugin creator. A touch under thirty minutes and I was back up and running. What great software.

After watching the newest video on the howto page, I'm now playing around with copying to a VHD using the copyp2v.tbs script. The fun never stops!

 

It doesn't. I'm still finding different ways of using the software.

 

Small question: I recently bought the IFW license. Brian K said that the download fee when purchasing is not necessary, so I must ask, that where can I obtain the newest full version, without using the download link provided by the retailer? Does the trial download work as a full version after the license key is in place?
