Honestly, I don't know why people bother with other paid solutions. Norton is probably the best, and can be had so cheap if you buy it on sale.

 

I wish I could respond to that with some "friendly" trash talk of course.

Don't bother, I have tested them all many times. There are other solid packages close to Norton, but you can't find them as cheap. A few weeks ago I got NIS free after rebate. There is no beating that.

 

Yes great prices for a great product, and it's hard to beat free.

Has NIS 2011 3 PC 2 years for $26.
I took advantage of this deal and got my license key a couple days later...

 

If you buy a two or three year deal for Norton, does that include the latest versions or are you stuck with 2012 for two+ years? I realize that some of you are using 2011 keys with 2012, but I wonder if that's just a temporary glitch.

As long as you have a valid license, you are eligible for free upgrades and it has been that way since Norton 2006.

-what the difference really is since I assume if I bought 2011 I could upgrade it (via live update) to 2012 so would it be wise to save a few bucks and update via live update- in other words is there a reason why I should purchase 2012 if I can upgrade 2011 to 2012 and still get the same layout..etc?

 

Note that you won't get the update via Live Update in my experience. You have to use "new version check", or just download the trial and install over the top. There's no reason to pay more for the new version. You could buy a 2007 version if it's the best deal - the keys are the same.

 

There is no need to have 2011 installed. Insert the 2011 key into a 2012 installation.

Is Norton really that good? I mean, I ditched them back on 2003 or so due to bloat.

Maybe I will trial it. If its not a hog I *may* reconsider it.

 

Trooper, NIS has gotten much better over the past 2 or 3 versions. It's very light, has several layers of security (AV, firewall, Insight, etc), with very good detection. I used to feel the same way about Norton as well and ditched them - but because of the many good reviews I saw here on Wilders I decided to give Norton another shot and it turned out to be a pleasant surprise.

 

I did also. Ran it from 1996 to 2003. So far I am very pleased with the 2012. It's definitely worth a trial. I'll be keeping it myself.

 

Thanks a lot guys, will give this a shot. Just gotta find a spare machine. Or maybe a virtual one.

P.S. What is insight?

 

It is a reputation system for executable files. For example download insight will tell you when your download is completed if the file is rated safe or not.

 

Picked up another license to sit on till I need it.
