Disgraceful that it took them so long and they let it happen in the first place.If i could i would sue them .On another "serious" note...is it just me that doesnt really like the black norton skin?.Every review ive read seem to love it.I don't like it at all.The "fun" hidden bits in the skin are even worse.Black silhouettes on a black background?.When will they put a bit of colour back into their products

 

True that any software can fail a test. But to question his motives because it did fail is wrong IMO. I'd like to see LanGUY do the retest himself sometime. He does a good service IMO. I'm not a Norton user and don't really like or dislike them.

 

Hardly a serious note - I think the GUI looks great and I love NIS 2012 as much as I did 2011. As they say, if you don't like it................

 

I question his testing rather than his motives, as that is purely speculative.If a poster here did a languy test and posted his results he would be ridiculed ,and told to leave it to the experts.I wonder what's so special that makes languys attempts any different ,and why you would want to see an amateur test/retest something? or do you think that languy is an av expert?. Anyone can find malware that an av doesn't detect ,but most would usually just submit the sample without making a song and dance about it.

It seems to me that Symantec jumped on this pretty quickly. Please explain what they could have done to "not allow this to happen in the first place".

 

That was a joke victek (hence the sarcastic smiley),though perhaps in retrospect ..not very clear.I was very impressed with the turnaround fixing it.

 

Thanks for clarifying. It's hard to tell sometimes, especially when opinions are all over the place (as they are in this thread). There's a pretty good discussion of this in the Symantec NIS support forum. I'm hoping they will post some technical information from the engineering group. If anything newsworthy comes out I'll re-post here.

 

My Avira subscription expires in a few days. It's been several years since I've done any serious comparisons of AV programs and so I came here looking for some expert info, i.e., to see if perhaps something better than Avira has emerged since.

This thread began with a promising note and tone in terms of useful info but has devolved into something far less promising. Be that as it may, would switching from Avira (AntiVir Premium) to Norton AntiVirus 2012 be an advisable thing to do? BTW, I'm not really bothered by this apparent hiccup with Norton, which seems rather academic to me. Or maybe I should be bothered - I don't know...

not trying to sway you or compare, but since I own all 3 I can comment. Why not give the new Eset a trial run. You will be surprised my friend.

 

Just in case you don't know A vs B threads for anti-virus are not allowed,for the reason that everyone has a favourite ,and each av has strength and weaknesses.Many of the top tier avs (of which avira is one) get their reputation from independent testing sources such as avcomparatives etc which you probably know.Personally I would just trial the ones you fancy to make sure they worked ok on your pc ,without slowing things down or interfering with other programmes,and then perhaps look at the best deals for licensing.I would personally make a backup image of your pc with your current configuration before testing.Protection wise ,none are 100% ,so its usually other features i go for these days ,like will it slow my pc down ,and how stable it is with other programmes (and how nice the gui is ).Again only you and your pc can answer that.

The way I look at it Symantec acknowledged and responded quickly to the problem. Support is an important aspect of what you're paying for with security software. I'm already using NIS 2012 and this response makes me feel more secure, not less. How well products are supported is not usually the first thing people talk about, but I would check that out before switching to something else.

 

Yes, performance issues are my #1 concern. I'm not looking for a comparison per se - just wondering if switching from Avira to Norton AV 2012 would be a reasonable switch. Thanks, ellison64!

 

they are all good. But instead of our saying what would work for this member, the reality is, he needs to trial them and make the right choice for himself. You wont go wrong with whatever you choose.

 

As far as performance, I find all 3 pretty equal. I have gripes about 3 but that is just me. Again, you will have to decide what effect as far as performance, each has on your own computer.

 

Interesting you should mention that. I instinctively navigate to support forums and my luck with Avira's "support forum" has not been the best. After reading this thread, I did go to the Norton forum and was very impressed with the interaction between Norton employees and customers, i.e., the employees actually interact with customers on the forums. That rarely happened (if ever) with Avira.

Yes it would be a reasonable switch.Performance wise on my laptop (i3) and desktop (core2 duo) norton is ridiculously light ,and it hasn't conflicted with anything. Im using it on a laptop and desktop at the moment and the deal here was too good to resist

I completely agree with Vicktek and Ellison64 that support is very important and not only that, it also very important, that how a particular suite performs in your laptop or desktop. As far as the rootkit problem goes, no product is perfect and the same thing goes for nod, comodo, avira or any other av.

There are so many threads in wilders where we can see that a particular malware has easily bypassed a particular suite. So, instead of complaining and whining we should help to improve the product and submit any samples we come across.

Test looks fine to me. I have followed his tests, and they are thorough and like a regular user could experience. The professionals don't have much more impact on me.

 

MINOR PRODUCT UPDATE: 19.1.1.3 for Norton Internet Security 2012 and Norton AntiVirus 2012 is Now Available

 

Out of my three computers... only one has updated itself via the live update to the new version. Why does not the other two computers update themselves as well? Is the new version pushed out slowly?
