Hm well I'm not experienced in this field at all really but I do know that DCS has "CryptoSuite" - with which you would be able to encrypt the data you want inaccessable before leaving the system.

Also- do you mean remote users access your HD through a network or users who physically sit at/use your PC? If it's the former, simply setting any good firewall to "block all traffic" while you are away should do the trick.

dear bob_man_UK, please let us know about you system. Detox asked a valuable question. using any third-party encryption tool will do the trick on both cases. if you are using file sharing then you can configure the Panda firewall to deny sharing traffic. also i can recommecnd you a FREE encryption tool called Cryptainer LE. there are other good freewares too.

thanks for the replies, but im actually talking about through the network,

ie \\(my pc name or IP)\c$

GFI languard 3 tells me this share is open and as a warning

i never opend it so it must be a default with windows, how do I stop it.

I would like to use the cryptography software but the amount of data run into the gigabytes and is important stuff (drawings for our product that could be sold to rival companies) panda has the firewall enabled blocking all traffic but I can still access my machine via the above mensioned path without even being asked for a password.

    please help.

Right click on the drive, choose properties > Sharing and select Don't share this folder.
See, that was easy! If you want to encrypt your work data which amounts to a few
GBs, EFS seems to be a solution. Windows 2000/XP/2003 ship with an advanced
encryption enabled file-system, which is based on the public key cryptography, a
technique popularized by PGP. However, care must be taken before enabling EFS, as
it's easy to alienate yourself from your very own data, if you somehow manage to
loose your secret key. I recommend a thorough study on EFS and how to deploy it in
a situation like yours, before getting your hands wet on it.

    Regards,
    AgentX

in your case EFS will do if your having 2000 or XP Pro. but remember to backup your encryption key otherwise you might lose your valuable data. XP home doesn't have this EFS.

if you don't have EFS then you should go for third-party encryption tools. well forget about Cryptainer LE and get the main version Cryptainer. try this link. you can also try Folder Lock.

Err ...you probably meant 'AgentX'. :p
I don't have any problem with that, however, as long as the letters A and X
    are in it. :D
