While using a Live CD I installed Bleachbit from the repositories and afterwards, a couple of hours later, my network disappeared from the system and no access to network. This occurred repeatedly, but not sure what caused the network to disappear. Didn't install Bleachbit and network remains present. :shrugs:

BleachBit Leaves Your File System Sparkling and Grime-Free ?

Yeah, but is there anything left in the system that works afterwards ?
I do have BB, had it for years but only used it carefully for minor trimming.

I use BB latest from their site on Natty and am yet to run into any issues. With g-conf cleaner, the Unity bar disapperars but after a reboot, all is well.

Keeps my Linux system from clogging my 8 GB SSD. Use CCleaner (with CCEnhancer) on Windows.

In my humble opinion, BleachBit, the Unnecessary File cleaner is for making windows users happy in Linux.

I do use it, but only for search history, flash, google earth temp. files, recent documents lists.
    Never run as root.
For flash cookies mainly. CCleaner cannot remove 'evercookies' (super cookies) as far as I am aware of. Bleach Bit can.

You make a great point, however, there is one thing that is a problem across all operating systems: privacy. Cookies, Flash cookies, history, all of that stuff is in Linux as well. Linux doesn't have a malware problem (yet), thank God. But we're all in the same boat when it comes to tracking and all that mess. These tools can help with that, but I'm with everyone else with regard to not touching anything else. That goes for Windows users too.

Most browsers like Opera, Chrome and FF have their own privacy and cookie manager so those can be cleaned out right from the browser itself.

Wanting a cleaner, slimmer system with more privacy has nothing to do with being users of any specific OS. Do I need to expand on that statement?

No. Let me expand on mine.

These sort of utility programs are relatively new to Linux. They only exist in Linux because these utilities exist in Windows. Thus they make Windows users happy in Linux.

BleachBit was created for Linux before Windows. They do make less experienced users more happy, not just Windows users. Your claim has no supporting evidence.

Linux geeks can create all the command-line tasks they want, but this software obviously save time, effort, and is probably more effective.

Not at all surprised ... LOL

Supporting evidence for what, my claim that BeachBit is to make Windows Users happy in Linux? Of course it does. That is obviously clear to me. :D

Linux has been around a whole lot longer than BleachBit.

Of course a Linux version of BeachBit was created before a Windows version. Duh, to make Windows users, that already had this type of tool in Windows, happy in Linux. You guys are supporting my case, thanks. ;)

In the for-what-it-is-worth department, I don't use this sort of utility in Windows either.

I personally think, tools like this are overrated and over-hyped in the guise of "security" and cleanliness, especially for a home system. . ;)

There are a lot of things it clean that are really not necessary in Linux, but are carry overs from Windows. Take logs for example, besides missing most of my logs (even in root) mode, it just not necessary to clean them up. That is what logrotate is for.

Hey but anyone can use what they want, I gave my opinion and that it that,

Windows has been around a whole lot longer than the first file cleaner.

Duh, have you ever thought about what OS the author uses and programs for? Sure we are, think what you want.

Why aren't you happy with it, being a Windows user as well?

Try living with 8 GB of space without cleaning junk.

Logs aren't essential either, especially for home users.

Try not to overgeneralize to the point of discrimination next time.

I am not sure is BleachBit has the following capability: I ran into a web page awhile back that had a tool that vacuumed the SQL-lite databases in the user profile's directory. I have it rigged into a macro to pull in from hard drive to RAM to scrub the SQL lite data bases in my user profile prior to saving the profile - i.e. I use a Live CD/USB environment in 4GB RAM currently.

Edit: Here's a link to the web page about how to vacuum your Firefox SQL databases: Vacuum your Firefox 3. I recobbled it into a script/macro combination for myself to use at the end of a FF session.

@chrisretusn: I'm not just a "Windows user" by the way. Why am I using Linux on my computer, and various other OS in VMware then?

@lotuseclat79: BleachBit can do that for specific browsers, but I'm not sure about any other SQL-lite databases.

    Hi J_L,

Looking at the web page I referenced in my post above (just edited), it looks like the technique will work against any SQL-lite databases as it uses an SQL-lite command!

Its not a bad little app.

Don't use it much, but when I do, it does what I want.

Remember to use the Preview function when possible.

Linux (ie not Windows) user, BTW as well ;)
