I question the wisdom of ESET's nag and orange icon behaviour, evident in final 2 weeks of license. For me it's a "turn off" and makes me want to uninstall rather than purchase. Just my opinion.

It's up to you. If you were satisfied with the protection that ESET has provided to you, extend your license. If not, uninstall the product and try out another AV.

    Hello Dermot7
All the different Av companies notify the user's differently when you are at the end of your licens periode. Symantec have auto renewal, which I personally do not like, or the will send you a email to notify you that it is about time to renew, if i remember correctly. With the last opportunity there is a risk for the email to end in the spam folder. So if I must choose between Symantec and Eset's way to notify, I would without any doubt choose Eset's way,...it is in my eyes less aggressively.
Just to clarify things, I have nothing against Symantec, is only used to illustrate different ways to notify about renewal.

    All the best :)

Thank you NoobStick, and Marcos, for your replies. I am content and convinced by the quality of ESET's protection, but I don't think it's fair or accurate (especially to inexperienced users) to imply that the protection "may" be compromised by the fact that license will soon expire. Thanks. :)

I agree with everything said before, all vendors notify their user in some way and ESET's way is not as agressive as others do it. Also their renewing policy is really user friendly. If you by accident lose 13 days of license because you purchased a new license instead of renewed your current simply send a mail to customer care and they will fix it.
But I think it would be kind of nice that you as user get the option "I know my license expires soon, just make the icon green again and stop notifying me and I will renew my license before it expires. Don't worry ESET, my money will come."

    Exactly Matthijs5nl, well said.
I suggest something like this (with obviously different artwork :D ) in addition to fading bubble notification, would be preferable, perhaps.

Just like to add, as a relative newcomer to ESET, that I happen to like the
    'orange nag icon'!
Apart from letting you know that your license is due to be renewed, I believe
the orange icon also signifies that Windows updates are available and ready
    to download/install.
Yes, I know most users know that updates are released on the second
Tuesday of each month but what the heck, the 'orange' is only appearing once
a month, once a year when your license renewal is due, or more importantly
when your computer's security is compromised in some way!!
Thanks for allowing me to air my views.

hey come on ! It is just a reminder notification. Would you prefere to dont know, dont renew and be many days or week with no db update and be unsecure !!o_O

I start with v2.7 and I was very happy of this new feature !!

This is the main reason of the reminder: user security. Some users even dont open the GUI for problem checking and the orange icon is the only way for call his attention.

For every person who complains about this, I hear 10+ who are happy that they got reminded....

It is a tough call - but one thing is certain - you will never please all the people... that's just never going to happen.... there are also good reasons to renew and keep the same username, it is less fraught with mistakes... and that means less customer frustration - and less support.

    Hello,

As I recall, in previous versions of NOD32 (i.e., v2.x), there was little notification except for a popup bubble that appeared briefly for a few seconds and then disappeared a couple of weeks before a licensed expired, and that was it. In subsequent versions (v3.0 to the current day), ESET has tried to find a balance in how renewal notifications are handled. Different customers have different feelings about how unobtrusive notifications should be, how and where they should appear in the program and on the screen, when they should disappear, what the wording should say and so forth. It is not a particularly easy or "one size fits all" answer as there's no one right way to do such a thing that everyone agrees on. All of the questions—and answers—to this are always going to be somewhat subjective.

ESET has gotten to where it is today by encouraging and listening to its users, and constructive feedback is always welcome: After all, the changes to how renewal notifications were made in v3 and v4 were largely driven by feedback in this forum.

    Regards,

    Aryeh Goretsky

This is nothing to complain about. 2 weeks can go quicker than you think. You don't want it to popup after it expires. I have used a couple of products that nag constantly for 30 days before expiration and if you renew at the point you lose the remaining month that would have been left. I still like the way ESET handles licensing better than anyone else. :thumb:

agorersky well explain how renewal notifications was before and was improved until now.

same things about system updates notifications, users asked for it. Pc with AV with all db virus update but without windows update is a pc badly protect.

IMO, a security product that dont mind about renewal and/or system update didnt done is a bad product. Eset product notified for both and thanks for it !!
