Does Forticlient Lite support more than one automatic updates per day?

I read in the PDF that it updates every 3 hours.

More accurately, it checks for updates every three hours.

When I installed FCL late on the 24th the "AntiMalware Signatures" file was 13.577 and it just updated to 13.580 (2100 UTC).

There is also an "AntiMalware Extended Signatures" which has remained at 13.566.

Regardless, detection and quarantine of 0-day exe file downloads from those malware sites has been superb regardless of what those yoot oob chimpanzees have published as "tests."

This is a busy little app. I've trusted nine executables in Malware Defender (HIPS and network rules) and added two Type 7 rules in Zemana. To be expected of course unless you're running your junk in full I-hate-to-think/work/know auto.

There's activity by FortiProxy with much connecting to 127.0.0.1 while Web browsing. As well as occasional connects to 1.1.1.1 by System Idle Process evoked by FCWscD7.exe. That's an interesting network self-test process (explained in their Knowledge Base if you're interested.)

I haven't gotten to digging some more in the KB or monitoring all this app does but so far I'm convinced there's some remote server-side access taking place for the 0-day proactives. Cloud? I don't know yet but I'm thinkin' it must be.

I've got it running parallel with MBAM Pro with no issues (except the need to turn off its protection when doing an on-demand scan with FCL).

Is FortiClient standard still exists? Their webpage does not exist and also the CNet page redirects to Lite download...

Seems like the only places FortiClient Standard is detailed is at download sites.

If you drill through the Softpedia links you end up at the Online Shop where you can click on FortiClient Endpoint Security which takes you to the forticlient dot com. There it's FortiClinet Lite, FortiClinet and FortiClinet Premium with the latter two looking more like enterprise solutions than anything else. Those two site pages are contact.html and enterprise.html respectively, their former(?) client/server enterprise apps.

Opening the FortiClient link under FortiClient Endpoint Security at fortinet dot com's sitemap takes you to... 404. If there's a FortiClient Web page for Standard, I've run out of places to look. IMHO, it's been abandoned - as sg09 and Kernelwars previous commented.

It would appear that they are in the process or re-marketing their tech to mainstream users and their Web needs to catch up. Perplexing is that most vendors offer free versions to entice users to purchase their real stuff. Where is the FortiClient "not-Lite" one could buy?

In and enterprise WAN, workstation AV clients offload detection duties to the server. I'm thinking FortiClient Lite is the client side (with local sigs) with connectivity to their servers - as in cloud. If you look at quarantined files there is a "submitted" tag and I'm suspecting unknown files are also submitted. Without snooping packets, which I'll never get around to doing, I can't confirm that. My observation so far is there is a TON of FortiProxy activity in terms of Internet connectivity and CPU hits, far more than without FortiProxy (which can be turned off in the GUI). According to their KB, FortiProxy provides "FortiGuard Web Filtering" and "Antivirus scanning for web content."

As of this point in time if FCL continues its superb operations on my test system, I'll be employing it on my production system later on this week - replacing a mainstream "2011" suite I've been running for over a year.

    FortiClinet Lite rocks.

For the unfortunate victims of the "feels heavy/light on my system" school of computer software technology, I've been testing on an ancient 1.7 GHz AMD system with a 266 MHz FSB and 512 MB RAM. It feels somewhat between not so heavy and not really all that light except when it's feeling really heavy or really light.

I know this has gone way past the one-line post & smilie attention span of the average Wilders member, so I'll cut it off here and forgo any further postings. Being free, FCL discovery can be passed on to the Wilders Where's My Free Steak Dinner? bozos. But I'll post up the first one here for them:

It's is bloated and looks like a rogue. :thumbd: :thumbd:

Fortinet used to have (in the past) only a limited set of malware fingeprints in the database for their first free version. That is why it did bad in test in the past. Fortinet discovered that this free product was not helping their reputation, but harming their reputation. So they decided to give the full suite for free.

Any one knows whether the lite version uses the same data base as the old standard version (on RAP test of VB the suite does very well lately).

    Thx

With apologies for coming in late on this but our own place has been so busy I've lost track of elsewhere.

I queried this for our own site a while back and this was the response from FortiNet:

"The direction of FortiClient is to simply offer two versions: FortiClient and FortiClient Lite. While the AntiVirus technology (engine and signatures) remains the same under both versions, the user base will differ. FortiClient Lite is not a 'try and buy' model, rather a free home based solution that offers AV scanning as well as Parental Control and VPN (Versions 4.3.2+)."

I too was quite impressed both with the performance of the porgram and the commitment demonstrated by the vendor to march up the VB RAP charts. I'd still like to see them participating in some more independent tests, if only to dismiss the rubbish being put out on YouTube.

Overall IMO this solution is more than enough for the average user who is already employing some common sense along with maybe a DNS filter and site ratings agent, neither of which will add any noticeable drag and will compliment the efforts of FortiClient Lite nicely.

Gave forticlient lite a shot yesterday.
    1. It's web filter seems good. You can add exceptions but no option to remove exceptions.
    2. You can't turn off Parental control and keep malicious web filter going.
    3. I failed to get any right click scan option.
    4. Shields up test failed with Comodo firewall running aside. Some ports are open and some are closed. Might be the VPN thing, though disabled causing the problem again.
    I was on XP x64.

With the 4.3.3 version released in december, you can now turn off Parental control.
Only strange thing for me right now is Windows (XP SP3) Security Center complains the AV is shut off. (SC recognizes FortiClient but says protection is turned off)

How is the access to disk (proxy used to generate quite some I/O.

I think it is a pity the autostart monitor is only in the old standard version (not the light version). I understand this because light is targetted at simplicity, still a nerds option to enable the autostart monitor would be nice.

I think that Forticlient Endpoint Security is a free solution, good enough for PC protection. Please note that it also has a very strong "state of the art" firewall.

They had removed the FW from free version. Is the FW added again?

My wife has an old computer that runs XP. It works perfectly fine for what she wants to do. Its fast & Zippy she doesn't care much about the newest & latest. Her browser is opera & shes happy with that. IE 8 does install slowly & I believe that it is invasive. I see no reason to tie this browser to a security system except that they no longer have to support the obsolete XP . I suspect that in the future more & more software will abandon XP but the proponents of Windows XP will continue to use these old computers. This especially true of Senior Citizens who just simply cannot trade in for new computers every 2-3 years.

I think this is the latest free "full" version - FortiClient Standard 4.2.5.0286 - and it's on Softpedia. As I remeber it can be updated (base of signature)
