Office 2010 Icons (Word 2010 icons replaced by "DOCX" icons)

I recently bought Office 2010 Professional Plus and installed it on my HP Pavilion dm4 laptop. When I created a word document in Microsoft Word 2010, saved it, and closed it and then reopened it, it opened with Word Starter that shipped with the laptop. I corrected this by changing the original default application for opening word documents from "Microsoft Office Client Virtualization Handler" (which came with Office Starter I guess) to the correct Microsoft Word 2010. It now opens automatically with Microsoft Word 2010.

However, now all the pretty Office 2010 icons (see screenshot) have been replaced by a white page with lines and "DOCX" at the bottom (see screenshot). This is annoying because they don't stand out as word documents anymore, decreasing productivity. I've googled this problem all night and couldn't find any solutions that work.

I attempted to reset the file assocation in Control Panel -> Default Programs with no success. I have tried uninstalling Office Starter and the Microsoft Office Client Virtualization Handler, but that didn't work, so then I reinstalled Office 2010 Professional Plus, and that still didn't work.

It definitely has something to do with Office Starter (which comes with Word and Excel) because Word and Excel are the only Office applications that are effected.

Does anybody know what I can do to get the Microsoft Word 2010 icons back while also having documents open with Microsoft Word 2010 (instead of Starter) by default?

Did you try rebuilding the icon cache? You can find instructions here:

I suggest first uninstalling the Office Starter Edition and then doing a "repair" of Office Professional - that should sort out both the file associations and the icons. Go into the Control Panel and select "Programs and Features". When you select Office Pro in the list note the repair option in the toolbar near the top.

I gave what you said a try, but unfortunately it didn't work. The icon is still "DOCX" and the 'Type of file:' remains as a "DOCX File (.docx)" instead of a word file. What should I do now?

Sorry to hear that you have the same problem, although at least we know we're not alone. I don't know when it happened, but Excel and Word 97-2003 files have their proper icons back now. Maybe repair reinstalling, numerous attempts to reset file associations, and upgrading to SP1 of Office 2010 did something.

Unfortunately the icon for .docx is still the wrong one after doing everything mentioned so far... and that's the one that I will be looking at 95% of the time.

I was looking at .docx in the registry and noticed that it had an "OpenWithList" folder with wordpad.exe listed (see screenshot). On my Vista desktop that has no icon problems, that folder does not exist. What does this entry mean and why is wordpad.exe listed instead of winword.exe? Is it possible for me to/should I change it? I've never played around with the registry before.

Also, I don't know if I already mentioned this, but Microsoft Word is the only Office application missing from the context menu when you right click on the desktop and click 'New'. Maybe the two issues are linked?

I wanted to make this post thanking everyone for trying to help me. I put off finding the solution for a while, but decided to search again today. I finally found the fix and wanted to post it here for reference for anyone who has the same problem.
