HTTP Support in IMON

Hi everybody !

It appears there's a new beta around, which includes an HTTP support in IMON, right ?
What a great idea !
Do you know when it will be released ? Or if I can find this beta ?

Eset has been saying anytime for the beta release to the public. Some users (myself included) have a beta (not the one that will be publically released) that has the HTTP scanner. We got it from tech support in an effort to solve a particular problem.

I used it for a few hours, but it slowed my 6 month old 3GHz, 1GB RAM box down too much. First time I saw the IMON download box and I sat there on my 3ms cable connection waiting, I said..nah...no way am I using this...I don't pay a lot for a fast cable connection to have my AV slow me down. So, I was not impressed, but that is just my opinion. Blackspear has it and loves it so you will have to judge for yourself.

I really cannot fathom ever even trying it on my W98SE box. I got NOD32 for two reasons...it was the fastest and the lightest AV when I was looking for a new one for my W98SE box. I don't mind some slow down in scanning on the XP box but I want the slow down to be from AMON....not IMON which causes too many problems anyhow. Anything that messes with Winsock and the LSP chain like IMON does scares the heck out of me. I've had too many broken internet problems because of applications messing with this.

But I don't understand very well the need of a HTTP scanning...
Malicious objets you can find on the net are .js .html .exe .dll (etc...) and those files are already scanned by default by AMON.
Really, I don't see how this feature can be usefull

 

imho it has 2 advantages:

- compressed files will be scanned (like .zip, .rar) Amon wont scan them and you have to unpack them or scan them manually to find out if the package contains a surprise. It just a matter of convenience.

- the advanced heuristic will be available for downloaded files (at least i think so) and there is a better chance to identify possible threats.

Since e-mail and the www are the 2 major ways a virus/worm/trojan enters your system nowadays, this option makes sense. I would recommend to wait and see. It´s still beta and you should check it, when it is released.

 

This has been my complaint all along. I want AMON given proper powers ....not IMON!

I was thinking of possibly switching to KAV because of this but now KAV 5.0 doesn't have the powers either (although I haven't tried it and am going on what I have read). McAfee Enterprise looks really good (again from what I have read here at Wilders and from reading the manual)...but I just need a personal AV....plus, I really like NOD32 so I'm still hoping for AMON to get proper powers and quarantine to actually be a quarantine. Eset has been promising that AMON will be beefed up soon so I'm waiting for that. As far as I am concerned, I would like to see IMON done away with entirely. I know that will never happen. I just don't see why people want a redundant email scanner. But I know most want lots of redundancy.

Eset has said that AMON is getting Adv. heuristic powers in the upcoming beta. That is not in the beta I have. So that will beef up AMON but AMON still can't unpack...that needs fixing. Then we won't need IMON and all the risks it brings with it serious messing with Winsock and the LSP chain. And then Quarantine is in desparate need of fixing.

 

Mele, even Rome wasn't built in a day, but I'm glad to tell that both desired functions will be incorporated in the beta.
