Combo Latest AVast Free with Latest Comos IS

I have been working with several computers as I commonly do, as I regularly service my own as well as my neighbor's computers.
After the most recent version updates of Avast Free Anti-virus (6.0.1203) and Comodo Free Internet Security (5.1.5.195786.1383) I seem to be observing some compatibility problems.
1) First, My one neighbor showed me that he was now having troubles viewing some net videos on his high speed connection. Disabling the webshield on Avast allowed him to watch the videos fluidly as he had before the updates. Of course we are not too happy with this option. (He uses Mozilla Firefox and the website he was viewing videos on is MLB.com)
2) Secondly, on another computer that combined the two programs, suddenly there were constant lockups of explorer.exe. I tried to explain the problem away in many different ways, but uninstalling Avast fixed the problem. Of course shutting something off in Comodo or Avast might have defined the problem area as well.

Anyway, not asking to define any definitive conclusions from my actions, I am curious as to whether any other users might have experienced simular problems as both softwares updated their programs on a major level at almost the same time. I do expect a limited number of bad experiences but am looking for a trend. In general, I actually like the quality of the two mentioned products.

 

You did disable the Anti-Virus of Comodo right?

 

did you setup reciprocal exclusions for both?

 

I dont think so, he said CIS and not Comodo Firewall

 

Im using Avast! free + Comodo Firewall, no issues so far.
All Avast! shields are up and running.

I did not install the anti-virus of Comodo.

One interesting observation. On the computer that had been freezing up explorer.exe with Avast anti-virus installed, I would have to do a cold shutdown to get out of the freeze. Each time that this computer would re-boot, Windows would scan the drive, and each time there was evidence that the computer had been accessing an Avast system temporary file when the system would freeze. So Avast, or some other software on my computer locked up examing or using those files at the time of the freeze-up (that is what I am thinking.) I am very open to other suggestions or observations.

I appreciate the opportunity to bounce this off of someone else.

 

Try uninstalling avast behavior shield (go to add/remove programs or programs and features >click on avast >change and uninstall the behavior shield ,and see if its any better.

 

I am going to try disabling the behavior shield in Avast.

Meanwhile, when I booted up today, I ran Spywareblaster and Spybot Search & Destroy to discover that all of their protections were suddenly disabled. This was not the case yesterday. ;(

This is not looking very good to me.

Could it be time to open a completely new topic, or perhaps it is time to give up and buy a new hard drive ? I already zero-ed out the current drive, and I did it the slow way.

Perhaps, however, after all of this, I have to start to believe that this is all nonsense and simply a situation in which various security softwares are not designed to work well together. They are trying so hard to be perfect that they are detecting each instead of protecting me.

 

You meant Spybot Immunize, not TeaTimer right? Shouldn't run 2 HIPS together, especially an outdated one like that.

You shouldn't have any problems on a clean Windows installation.

For the first problem, try setting up exclusions.

 

Yeah, I know that you are probably correct in that. I have had a few things pop up recently, and if you know what I mean, sometimes you want to run a few extra programs to see what you can see. I had not used Spybot Search & Destroy in ages, much less, have I even had it installed on any of my systems. And as you have pointed out or might be obvious here, I had with that also added another unrelated detail to confuse everything a little bit more.

I apologise for taking so long to get back with more details. I think that I have finally worked this out, and boy, did I work for it! I have to be honest, I don't think I will ever know exactly what went wrong here. I had to do some very detailed things to get one computer straight. I don't think that reading my experience will help anyone here... It is just one of those things, but I do appreciate the feedback and support. The people here are always great for that and sometimes... it kind of keeps one from going crazy when nothing goes straight.

I literally had to put so much into trying to straighten out this computer that in most circumstances I think other people would simply had given up and gone out to purchase a new hard drive.

For fans of the absurd I will leave just a few comments here in regards to my work.

I did find one thing on each computer (distinct items) that might have something to do with each computer's poor behavior.

On one computer I found one file as evidence of some type of trojan that probably did not manage to get very far but might have been responsible for some chaos. On the other I dscovered how an upgrade to WinPatrol had left duel installations present on the syetam and in the registry. I am also thinking that the subsequent repeat locking up of Explorer.exe might have caused some mayem with the hard drive that went undetected. I put in endless and very extensive work on the harddrive of that seemingly hopeless computer until it finally flew like the wind again. This involved a day of defragging and repeatedly running boot-scans and file cleaners on a drive that should have been very well defragmented and cared for in the first place. I must have hit on somthing. This supplied the final fix. I guess that I won't have to replace that harddrive now.

Like I have said, there is nothing worth printing in science here, just evidence of a lot of hard work and perhaps, the computers decided that I was going to beat them to death if I had to put any more work in on them... Thusly concluding that it was time to behave or die.
