Is the key limited to the version/installer provided, or can we download the latest version from Agnitum website and apply the key?

Ah, missed that part. The installer on the promotion is an older version, 7.5.0.3720.574.1668.
    Regardless, good deal. :)

I'm having trouble with the registration. I thought maybe it was No Script but after allowing the page I'm still having problems with it.

Installed 7.5 from promo link and it worked. Installed 7.5.1 over the top of 7.5 and the key code will not work.

    acr1965,

Firewall and web control was what I installed.

    just downloaded and installed...
while installing security center popped up showing no firewall..
updated outpost pro during installation and all completed.
    Restarted...
Outpost pro was in learning mode ..suddenly it popped up showing an exe "tcp..blib.exe" wants to access internet.. i thought it was outpost's program.
i allowed it.. outpost popped up again showing it wants to connect to a port..
i found suspecious...it then tried to start dw20.exe.. it tried to access physical memory..i terminated it... but outpost couldnt remember my setting. it popped up again and again.....i then scanned with hitman pro.. hitman pro got stuck.o_O i ended hitman pro via task manager.. and scanned again now it detected that exe as Kazy with Gdata.. i uploaded it to virus total...
    It was a backdoor..

so if u r going to use outpost try to update it after installation..
also expect a lot of alerts.. PARANOID o_O

What I find more interesting is that they don't offer just the firewall (even without anti-spyware and web control) as a free product or a giveaway for it. One would think that a product containing the fewest amount of features (ONLY firewall and HIPS) would be the most likely to be offered free of charge. But no! That's the product they strictly keep paid. It boggles the mind.

It's an outdated version with no option for an upgrade (which, for sure, means future upgrades).
The site where this offer is hosted is not the most reliable place for downloads as well.

It's version 7.5 which was only released on June 15 so not really very outdated. The only update since has been a minor release 7.5.1 on July 14. You are correct that it's not possible to upgrade to the latest or any subsequent releases as the giveaway key only works with the download provided which was from agnitum.com so not an untrusted source.

I have no idea why Agnitum has restricted the giveaway so it can't be upgraded with newer bug fixes etc I can only assume that they think people will purchase a licence key just to upgrade and I don't see that happening as this version is recent enough and stable enough to use for the duration of the giveaway licence period. It's still a good deal though.

I thought 7.5.1 was the much talked about 'Performance Edition' which came very quickly after the release of 7.5, no? So for me effectively Agnitium are saying version 7.5 did not perform as well as it should/could on release and needed the .1 upgrade.
The giveaway suggests you save 29.99 (the retail price for the current + upgrades for a year) but you don't really as you get an old version and no upgrades. It's therefore only a good deal for those willing to accept what the supplier themselves admit is not an optimised version of their software with no facility to improve on it IMO.

    Anyway..........

Hi Chris, 7.5 is the 'Performance Edition' and 7.5.1 is a minor release. It's still a good deal to get a free 1 year licence but I don't think they should have restricted it so it can't benefit from upgrades.

Thanks for clearing that up, we will have to agree to disagree on our interpretation of 'good deal' though :)

    Cheers

Agnitum offers both a free firewall product and a suite which adds an antimalware module. Both are stripped down versions of the paid products and are behind the latest version. They are pushing the suite so the stand alone firewall version is older and has been around for a while now. They may be obtained here:

I only wish their free firewall was win7 64 compatible. I love the firewall/hips but not the AV part.
