In my personal experience, Gmail has always had the best spam filter. However, I didn't try many others.
You are perfectly right, but tell me what is actually safe nowadays? You must have read about the Murdoch's scandal in England, something that is almost unbelievable and outrageously wrong. The only way to preserve your privacy today is to remain silent (even that one day might be violated by telepathy). I have no problems with Google's privacy attitudes insofar as my messages are basically very common, but I understand your concern in principle over the privacy issues on the internet.
Yes sad, it is tough but it can be done (both free and paid) if the communicating parties and the general public in general commit to doing it!. There is at least one webmail service (paid) i know of where "EVERYTHING" - emails, files, contacts, folders - everything in your account on the server is "encrypted" with your public key. Anyone with access/given access/hacked access to your account will see nothing but gibberish and unless they can somehow acquire your "private key" and "password" from your computer, will be useless to them. This is a call only the individual can make. I am completely at the other end though, meaning - i don't care if my email says simply "hi, how are ya" - that's my business and the receipteint's business and no-one else's including "google's"
For simple setup (meaning not asking me 100 questions, many no web mail provider needs to know, and not stalling/quitting either half through the process, or at the end, only to make me do it all over again), simple interface and stability, and minimum annoyances, I'm going with Hotmail. GMX got swallowed up in Facebook, Yahoo has the clunkiest, most unstable interface I've ever seen, and Gmail can kiss my behind trying to get my cell phone number just to have their email service.
I love GMail for it's features. It's consistently coming out with new features that make email so much easier.
Well I don't "need" any of the features. But I like that I can unsend mail. I like that I can send mail in the background. I like that I can sort mail in various ways.
"Unsend" mail? That's called thinking before you write As far as sorting, I have folders for each person in my list. That's about as much sorting as I care to do.
Unsend mail is very helpful, you can't account for human error and it adds an extra step of verification.
No. I prefer my email client, but when traveling, I rely on webmail to stay connected. I also use webmail to do maintenance. I don't have a favorite, but use Fastmail's webmail, as well as EuMX's with it's choice of: Webdisk, SquirrelMail, Horde, Roundcube interfaces.

All the mentioned features that supposedly make Gmail "superior", nowadays can be found in Live Hotmail as well - and improved. Some of them, like storage space and message size limit, are better in Live Hotmail. Gmail currently offers 7,6 GB of storage space, while Live Hotmail offers ever-growing unlimited space (the more you need, the more it gives). Gmail currently limits e-mail attachments to 25MB max, while Live Hotmail offers a much larger 10GB limit, thanks to its integration with Skydrive. And finally, Live Hotmail has some features that Gmail still doesn't, like support to aliases. Check and compare. That's a personal opinion. In my personal opinion, Live Hotmail currently updated UI is better, as it requires less mouse clicks to most common tasks and optimizes screen readability more than Gmail.
