Ain't it a good sign that there are no issue that need to be addressed by updating modules?

maybe we need a new HIPS module
some grayware (e.g packer detection, possible malware) try to close the GUI window (rather than killing the process) every 1 second
is annoying because interaction with the GUI is not possible and the threat cannot be killed from memory

How many different builds have been released since beta testing started for Eset Smart Security 5? Has any been released recently?

1 Beta and 1 RC. This thread was started on June 14 so that was the last time something was released.

Thanks XXJackXXX! I was beta testing ESS 5 for a while, but had to free up some machines for beta testing other products. I was having several issues with ESS 5 that I reported when using certain applications. I suppose those issues may still exist if there's only 2 builds released.

I thought I would have a look at the AV+HIPS. I do like the fact that the protection is not excessive, but does cover the main needed areas.
I did find the HIPS to be quite buggy when attempting to place custom rules from popup. I was asked various times for one of my applications to be given read access to the same file. The popup informed me a access request was made, and in the popup I was informed that if I allowed the default rule, then also write access would be allowed. I did not want that. So expanded the rules to only allow access, but to any file, but was asked again (and again) until I placed a default path. On checking the created rules(s) I found that the rules created where not just for access (as I had made in the popup) but also for write permission.

Looks interesting for a beta, but certainly needs more work.

edit: One curious fact. I was not informed about the loading of a Kernel driver, even though the "load driver" protection was enabled in the rules

    2 bugs with interactive HIPS:
    1. You can both select Create rule and Allow temporarily at the same time.

    2. Sometimes, for example when you insert a USB thumb drive, there comes a pop-up of a driver which wants to load, but there is no source listed, only the target, plus you have to allow it 3 times everytime before it starts popping up, even if you click Create rule. This is also after learning mode, so it seems learning mode isn't able to create a permanent rule either.

Not a bug. Each check box has a different functionality. While a rule would be created just for the particular operation carried out by the process, temporary remembering the action for the process would apply the selected action automatically to any operation carried out by the process until the next reboot. So it would make sense to have both boxes checked.

The global operation "Get access to file" should be replaced with the more specific "read file" action (get access to file with read-only permissions)

    More modularity:
possibility of adding crucial targets by mean of groups
for example: a group containing system file paths, another containing the my docs folder path, another containing all startup settings registry keys
this way, the "modify startup settings" can be implemented by using a "modify registry" operation

I'd like to see an update of any kind that fixes the program opening at different sizes and positions on the screen.

Files with Extensions not listed in the on-demand scanner, are not logged in the report, even if the log all objects option is enabled.

the same behavior should be expected in statistics for the protection modules!!! :)

I see on the Eset beta page that the v5 beta is closed.. http://www.eset.com/us/beta/ Is the beta officially closed now?

Also, I previously got an email from Eset for the beta that trial license is good until 10/30/2011 and am currently running the av on my laptop. If Eset 5 is released will my trial continue until 10/30/2011?
