is spybot-search and destroy any good?

i was thinking of downloading either that or SuperAntiASpyware (free edition) into my computer.. Cnet user reviews gives both mixed reviews (some say they're awesome, some say dont bother)

Are either one good? ......Or are they both bad? ....... Which one would be better?

(right now i have kaspersky ((paid)) and malwarebytes((free)) ..both aren't detecting what I want them to)

 

'mixed reviews' are probably correct.

In the old days, antiviruses didn't catch adware/spyware/some trojans at all.
That has changed. These days, antivirus=antimalware.

Antiviruses have severe limitations.

If they are not detecting what you want them to, maybe you are just not getting infected ?

I haven't used an antispyware application for over two years.

 

Im not sure if Im infected actually .. what I was looking for was an apparent keylogger that kaspersky spotted, but allowed into my computer.. but i did restore and a bunch of other things and now neither one will find it ....who knows....*sigh* .. I dont know how to do a complete system reboot to be absolutely sure.

The immunization function is the only reason to have it imo.

 

I agree with cm1971. Personally, I haven't used it in years and see no reason to. Apparently it can't clean serious infections up anymore (it's never used by any cleanup forums I see) and the TeaTimer component caused more issues than it solved.

FWIW... IMO, if you are running into things Kaspersky and MBAM can't deal with, you might consider using some type of virtualization (Sandboxie & such.) That way, it won't matter what you run into...

 

SuperAntiSpyware is better for detection, Spybot S&D is better for protection (Immunize is compatible with other security measures). Hitman Pro has better detection than both, but free removal only lasts 30 days once activated.

 

How often does S&D gets updated?
I mean the definitions and the program itself.

 

Every week for the definitions, and the stable version hasn't been updated for a long time. Not really liking the bloat of the new beta.

 

SAS is overrated (look at all the tests out there), I guess Spybot has a better detection ...

I dont particularly find need of antispyware. antivirus have evolved so much to include it in itself.

 

Spybot wasn't even involved in the tests, so you can't tell. I've used both for a long time, and tested them. Although SAS has pretty low detection rate, it's incomparable to the abysmal S&D stable.

 

S&D was good back in the early days like in 2004/5. Would not recommend it now. I agree the tea timer caused lots of problems.

SAS, MBAM, DrWeb, HitmanPro are all excellent free scanners.

 

I use it for immunization, but ONLY for that.

Here's my problem. .. I read on a forum that the particular 'keylogger' I got might not even be a keylogger at all.. It came up as 'kernel mode memory patch' and I read that kaspersky registers it as a false positive for a keylogger.. Anyone have any knowledge/experience with the 'kernel mode memory patch'? .....know what it is and how to deal with it?

 

Sounds like a deep rooted type of malware, but I could be wrong. :/

 

MalwareBytes is by far better than SuperAntiSpyware..No one program get's it all and I use both of these 2.

I wouldn't recommend SpyBot, it may have been good a few years ago, it missed a trojan on my notebook that Norton also missed, luckly SUPERAntiSpyware (freeware) found it. I have a lot of faith in SAS & prefer it to MBAM, which I thought was a bit prone to false-positives. Either way, if you already have MBAM you certainly won't need the aged SpyBot. I had a huge problem with Tea Timer as well once, it just isn't worth downloading SpyBot IMHO. It will never grace a computer I own again. The only thing that I truly liked about the protection function was that it covered Opera, which SpywareBlaster doesn't (yet).

However, if you want to test it, why not try the Portable Apps Version?

 

I have been using MBAM for a long while now and have never had a false positive. For me personally it is the best on demand scanner. When I was using SAS it always had trouble shutting down when I rebooted Windows.

 

I ran MBAM (freeware) for about a year, in that time I had at least six false-positives. I'm not doubting its efficacy, but as I had been running SAS before I installed MBAM, I decided I just didn't need it.
