Which DNS would you prefer 2011?

I've been using Comodo Secure DNS since it's inception now. I notice no slowdown whatsoever compared to my ISP's, and I've seen it block a few sites. But I'll be giving Private FW a try, and if I like it, I'll be looking for new DNS servers. So I'm open to suggestions.

OpenDNS is an obvious one to try.

 

When Chrome 15 comes out I'll move to Comodo.

One also has to wonder what a browser has to do with a DNS service.

 

Chrome doesn't allow for proper adblocking. If I use a local DNS it'll bypass a host file.

I won't use a local DNS until I've got proper adblocking.

Local DNS is when you run a DNS server on your own network. It has nothing to do with Comodo.

You can use ANY DNS service like Comodo and a HOSTS file perfectly fine.

Your post is very confusing, not really simple at all. You seem to refer to Comodo DNS as "local" DNS, when it simply isn't.

If I use Comodo DNS on my machine I won't see the effects of the host file.

Again, Comodo is NOT "local" DNS, hence why your original post made no sense. Comodo is 3rd party DNS, so if you wanted to make your post "faily simple" it would have been:

But even that isn't true as most routers that can run as DNS servers use a master DNS server, which may or may not be configurable in your router selection. I'd be surprised if it isn't.

I could put Comodo DNS on my router in conjunction with the host file... possibly. Haven't tried, I would rather test it myself before I have it on my network, which I share.

Why not install the HOSTS file on your machine temporarily to test Comodo DNS?

 

What should I see when Comodo blocks a page? Just a DNS error or does it have a special page?

 

ClearCloud and Norton have block pages, I'd find it very odd if Comodo did not. I did some searching and this might be the block page here.

Comodo is ipconfig /all.

 

ipconfig /all wouldn't show me that it was working, especially since it's on my router

 

Best way I've been able to come up with for Comodo is to go to their forum and grab a link off the Report Blocked Sites You Believe Are Safe thread.
Not the most efficient, but until they get as test page, it's all I could come up with.

 

Yeah I tried it with a few but they weren't blocked. Not sure if they're just whitelisted now or if it's not working.

 

That site (rapidshare.com) is no longer being blocked by Comodo.
