    Hi icr,

This is an excellent question, and one that is debated quite a bit here at Symantec. The reality is that if there was some way for us to 100% guarantee that the file was indeed NEVER run on this machine, then we could consider doing something like this. The user may have run the file when the product was not installed, or when AutoProtect was disabled or when their license had expired. In all these cases we aren't monitoring which files are being run and hence have no record of what the file did on the machine. So we have to deeply scan the machine once a file is detected to look for any side-effects.

    Regards,

    Shane.

To clarify.. you are right clicking on a single clean file and it is taking a long time ? On my VM it completes in less than 2 seconds in the NIS 2012 Beta3

This technique is like a coin having a different meaning on both sides altogether, this technique hits high detection efficiency during cases you mentioned but, it does take time and even resources which might severely affect low end systems. I tested norton on my VM with lowest possible resources and I experienced alot of hang upso_O

I am tempted to try the NIS Beta again, but when I tried it when the first release was I couldn't update the product. I guess that will be fixed by now (some months later)?

I've not really seen much of that complaint with the current build. My biggest gripe is that the current build has been out for 6 weeks and I am just getting bored. :D

My biggest problem is not the long wait but the fact that SONAR is not working properly in this build. I really hope they release a new proper version soon.

This has been fixed in build 19.1.0.16 which was posted a couple of days ago.

    Thanks,

    Shane.

Why now the boot protection is disabled by default?

Why now is the smart definitions that comes enabled by default?

Does anyone know if there is an issue with the beta running in a Virtual Box VM? I can't get it working in an XP SP3 VM.
