No, they aren't. Their only goals are to "show off", which is pathetic since they aren't exactly the best at what they do.

They're shunned by the antisec community and, thankfully, the media likely won't give nearly as much of a damn as they did before -- it's old news.

Yes, more secure ... and kill switches will be resulting measures to ensure the internet becomes fully secure - for the governments, of course. The ability to knock out our ability to read/research the news/scandals as they're breaking will be the end result - if we're not careful.

These hacking groups are becoming so notorious just lately. They're the new scary terror threat, it's right up there with Al Qaeda, IRA, Hamas, CIA, etc.

I'm pretty sure it wont be long before one of the members of these so-called-hacking-groups is publicly exposed, and found to have close links to the American, or British the branch, of those above mentioned terror groups.

This feels like we're heading towards something huge. Something so huge it sealed the end of the internet as we knew it. IMO.

No. All they're doing is giving publicity to this movement. What does this do? It gives the government an excuse to start taking over the internet and to start trying to control everything. All they're doing is leading to a stricter internet.

 

I wholeheartedly agree with you. It's clowns like these that start the media fires, then the "omg, we have to do something!" panic from the general public, and then you see your friendly government on the TV and in newspapers calling for this and that law, "technological improvements" in prevention (aka-spying), and so forth. These idiots are leading us to the very things they are supposedly against. How's that for irony?

 

And that's why the actual underground hackers hate them.

 

Attempts by the government to "take over the internet" predated LulzSec. In fact, the hacking is, to some degree, protest against opaque government, and the billions of dollars we spend here in the U.S. on security firms like Booz, who partner with NSA to spy on us. Talk about "taking over the internet." There is no collective of "underground hackers" that agree, or disagree, to a man, about LulzSec or anything else.

Political enemies will always exploit sloppy security. That's why Booz Allen was hacked, and that's why members of Anonymous were arrested. However, Booz Allen, et. al are in the security business. They should know better. And members of Anonymous, AntiSec, or LulzSec might be willing to go to jail to call attention to the cause. Their own security might not be foremost in their minds.

 

To be perfectly honest, LulzSec are a bunch of Skids, using basic SQLi exploits....
and they have no motivation for what they are doing....
all they want is media and public attention....

 

Cut and paste coding and LOIC are not elegant. But they work.

These are acts of civil resistance. Anyone willing to be jailed in order to protest, what is in their view, unjust authority or practice is, in fact, highly motivated. It would be a grave mistake to think otherwise.

Indeed. This isn't "V For Vendetta", no freedom fighting here, just a bunch of little jerks screwing around, causing problems and dragging the public down with the "bad guys". They're not going to jail "for their cause", they're going because, as inevitably happens when you've gone a long time without getting caught, they got too cocky. Anon might have started out with somewhat good intentions, but as they let more and more people join their "army", again, the inevitable happened. Too much cockiness and, worse, too many differing agendas.

Lulzsec was the worst thing that could have happened for this so-called "cause". And yes, I'm very much aware the government has been trying to gain more control since long before this, but that's irrelevant. What's going on with these guys is speeding up the process of that gain of control. By the way, how is it known these people are "willing" to be jailed? For all we know (and what's most likely), they had the fear of god put in them and sang like canaries.

 

There is a lot of evidence that Anonymous (and for brevity's sake I mean LulzSec, AntiSec, et. al) is a cohesive social movement based on the tenets of crypto anarchy. Though the politics are not rigid, and the skills, mindset, and motivations of the members vary, they are obviously united in certain goals.

LulzSec's statement regarding why they targeted Booz Allen was comprehensive and clear. This is a firm that was involved in the warrantless wiretapping of U.S. citizens. More to the point of this thread, Booz is one of the nation's largest security contractors. Billions of tax dollars have flowed to them.

And there was no media firestorm about this particular hack. In fact, the mainstream media largely ignored it, with the exception of Reuters.

 

The media has moved on. LulzSec ran away with their tail between their legs and anyone who was following the story probably isn't interested in this little death rattle.

 

That is one theory. Another is that the story was muted in order to allay security concerns and reduce noise in order to assist in certain aspects of the investigation.

The attack on Booz Allen was, in a sense, the most symbolically significant one and I doubt the thinness of coverage can be attributed to lack of interest.

 

Nah. Wasn't lulzsec though they hoisted the flag primarily because the media didn't give a poop about "Anonymous" and so "lulzsec" did it. Heh.

This coming Saturday, "Anonymous" is going to try for big media attention with flyer-posting all day and then come 20:45 hours (8:45PM) US Eastern Daylight time, the kids will all assemble on their IRC channel to be given instructions on "what to hit" and how. So figured I'd let folks know in advance here and let's see how well they get press without flying that pirate flag. I have no idea of what they'll be up to, but of course many of us will be watching ...

 

Thank you Kevin. Hopefully they don't get much press at all, all they ever do is fuel this crap. I think after lulzsec "retired" people lost interest/ the media moved on.... I just hope that remains the case for at least a while longer.

Thanks, mate! Yeah, I suppose their "press" all depends on whether or not any additional celebs snuff it or Rupert gets nicked first. Fortunately their next cruise is set for a weekend and with the economy being in the dumper, hopefully the lights will already be out in the newsroom by the time they find the cord to their ion cannons.

But they ARE claiming "something big" so should something of note actually transpire, I'd better see my name in lights, bucko! (grin)
