Do Norton and Symantec share engines and protection?

At work we have Symantec Endpoint which I am allowed to install on home pc (since I use it to access work sometimes). I'm wondering if it shares the same technologies as NIS (esp 2012). Norton got really good scores in the latest tests. I have Avast 6 free right now.

To answer your question, Symantec Endpoint Protection [also known as SEP] as it currently stands, version 11 MR6 [where MR6 stands for Maintenance Release # 6] does NOT share the same platform as Norton consumer versions [NAV 2011 & the upcoming NAV 2012 or NIS 2011 and 2012].

There are some good news for you, however. Symantec is currently working on a new version of SEP [ version 12.1] which will share platform with NIS 2012. It will include SONAR, Norton Power Eraser, Insight, and other technologies currently present on NIS 2011 & 2012 only.

The are aiming to release this new SEP version this summer, in the USA and at this year's end for other countries.

Just a reminder, it's a BETA version which means it may have some BUGS that can cause instability and/or data loss. Thus, test it on a system that is not your primary PC and/or laptop.

Thanks. I guess I'll stick with Avast for now and start using SEP when we switch to it at work. Or maybe I should try the NIS 2012 beta.

They are, but for some strange reason Norton has been getting all the good thing while cooperate are stick to the old, slow, bloated Norton Engine used in the pre 09 era.

May be Symantec felt the engine needs full testing before it is rolled into business / cooperate customers.

 

SEP 11 shares the same antivirus, malware cleanup, and IPS engines. The Norton products have a very superior dynamic behavioral engine (SONAR vs. TruScan), more aggressive static heuristics, cloud detections, cloud reputation, browser exploit protection, antispam and antiphishing.

The upcoming corporate product (in beta) adds the more aggressive static heuristics, cloud detections, cloud reputation, and browser exploit protection. The antispam and antiphishing are not part of the upcoming corporate product. The two product lines do not share a firewall.

Got to ask why are they good in enterprise but struggle to release a av on home computers that doesn't slow it down notably.

 

They don't struggle, and haven't done, since pre 09 versions. Norton have one of the lightest av's around. Seems U haven't tried for many years. Give it a go and you'll be surprised

 

I must say its A lot better than it use to be since 09 but the lightest? Nope. You won't find Norton anywhere near a pc of a person who does any sort of gaming online or offline. I'm surrounded by these fellows everyday. They should think about lighten the load and the compatibility with other products

 

Norton 2011 is one of the lightest security suites around atm.
My main machine is a gaming machine and norton doesnt impede my gaming at all. i never turn off my security while gaming because i dont need to. norton works quietly in the background.

what compatibility issues have you experienced?

i used to be biased against norton because the pre 2009 versions were rubbish imo. they used alot of resources had bad detection and were hard to remove. norton 2011 is a fantastic product imo, light on resources, reliable protection,frequent updates and removes easily. one thing i detest if the fact there is no way to close the norton account dialog without entering some information. if you close it via task manager you kill the norton gui which is just stupid...

So your telling me that members like me and lodore who have been here since around 2004/6, who have alpha/and betatestet most security software many times during this period, dont know anything at all, by arguering with what ur so-called "extrem-psycho-gamer-friends-experts" friends tell you. I can tell you at least eight of my "extrem-psycho-gamer-friends-experts" uses Eset and Norton while gaming because they dont slow down or interfere. Here you go - was that a good argument?!

You are new here and ofc we have different experiences/hardware/conflicts and so on and we all have to learn But just dont tell me that I dont know anything, based on "extrem-psycho-gamer-friends-experts"

 

For me 2010 was the best in terms of lightness. But I can only see that difference on older machines. These days on a new machine, its rare for me to notice big differences between the suites/av's. Often its only by comparing numbers on boottime, cpu/ram usage during idle-scanning and i/o writes I can see the differences.

Btw. awsome that you can use Eset on a machine with 512mb ram
