KIS 2012 - Public Beta

Installed, updated, scanned, and ready go go. Do I need to worry about setting it up to grab updates automatically on a schedule like Avira? I know Kaspersky updates numerous times per day and I want to be sure that it will update when the defs are released.

AFAIK Automatic update mode (default settings) is the same as updating once in two hours, so you don't really need to configure it. I have set it to update once in an hour though.

 

Have not used KIS in years but trying this one and nice so far. Anyone have any suggestions for some extra protection settings? Thanks.

 

http://forum.kasperskyclub.com/index.php?showtopic=7393 (ignore the "authentication required" message) Although that's for 2011, many of those still apply for 2012 with a few exceptions: AFAIK 2012 doesn't benefit from the HIPS ruletweaks at the end of the first post, and if you want, you can enable behaviour-based keylogger detection from Settings -> Proactive Defense -> Settings -> Check Keyloggers. I wouldn't recommend doing everything listed in that topic though, edit the settings like you want them to be

KIS found 2 vulnerabilities with flash in HP/Digital imaging. Anyone know what I am supposed to do with this? My flash is up to date and I cannot find out how to update this problem. Thanks. Do I just delete the files?

Click "Details" in the vulnerability entry of the report and follow the recommendations (usually update).
If you have updated, it may be a redundant file. Either way, I don't advise you delete the file.

Anyone here at wilders know when this will be out for proper public use, not beta but the complete program?

 

Nobody knows the answer to that but if previous years are an indication I would expect to see a final build sometime in June. But that is just a guess.

 

I have been trying the Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 Beta for a couple of days now (after trying ESET Smart Security 5 Beta) and I must say it is a huge improvement over last year's version. Kaspersky's protection has always been very good, although it had a little dip sometime ago, and it has been top-notch in the last tests again.
The biggest improvement is also the improvement which had to be made, since that was my biggest complaint about KIS 2011. KIS 2012 Beta is really much lighter on my pc, whereas KIS 2011 was the most bloated security product I had ever seen.
Although with KIS 2012 Beta I experienced one issue I also experienced with KIS 2011, slow scan speeds. A full scan takes more than an hour, whereas ESET completes it in about 35 minutes and products like avast! even faster. The problem is at the most important system folders (system32, etc.) where scan speeds on dll and exe files are really slow. For example scanning of two files, regedit.exe and notepad.exe takes four minutes! However after those files have been scanned scanning seriously speeds up again. Some scan reports, in which I see a lot of rootkit scans being performed (four in six hours!):

• Critical Areas Scan: completed 1 day ago (events: 2, objects: 4774, time: 00:17:42)
• Full Scan: completed 23 hours ago (events: 1229, objects: 424221, time: 01:01:09)
• Rootkit Scan: completed 22 hours ago (events: 2, objects: 2069, time: 00:21:47)

A great improvement is the new user interface in my eyes, which is really beautiful and easy to use, in fact I think it is the best user interface I have ever seen in a security product.
Next to that KIS 2012 Beta still has the strenghts it had: a great firewall, great application control, great advanced configuration possibilites. Thanks to the great firewall and great application control KIS is one of the few (maybe the only) internet security suites which is worth the upgrade compared to the antivirus version.

The configuration I am using is really simple, but in my eyes provides the best balance of performance, protection and usability. Perform a default installation of KIS 2012 Beta and make the following changes:

• change the run mode of updates to every 1 hour;
• enable proactive defense for keyloggers;
• enable detection of the 'other programs' category of threats.

So thanks to the these great improvements is on my top list of security products again (with ESET ofcourse, my two all time favourites), however to make me buy it again they have to make some improvements in the final release, additional to continuous protection improvements:

• further improve its impact on the pc, and;
• improve scanning speeds on my system, and most importantly;
• bring back the custom installation, since KIS 2012 Beta is still kind of bloatware with lots of features I don't want to install, such as: the virtual keyboard, all the tools except the rescue disk tool, parental control, vulnerability scanning, Safe Run for Websites (which is limited on 64-bit systems anyway) and any kind of browser extensions/plugins.

I basically agree with all that you say re. KIS 2012, and there are alot of excellent other features, ie, Task Manager, that improve the product. However, I am a bit surprised by what you say about the scan times as I am seeing the best ever on my system; much better than 2011 but better than the earlier versions that were pretty good...when yo take into account that the scanning process needs to cover more than just viruses as it did then.

Full scan is particularly fast, and even faster, on my system, on the subsequent scans if you have iChecker & iSwift on, etc.

Could there be some other security app conflicting with the scan? What are you scanning by; all files, by format, by extension? Am just interested so that I can give it a try if it is different to the scan set up on my system.

There are no other security applications installed, conflicts are impossible. My configuration (also for scanning) is all default except the three changes I have posted.

 

What I don't like about KIS is that it is so SSD-unfriendly. It flushes the entire registry and writes it to disk every 4-5 seconds, 24/7, which makes for a large amount of unwated writes. And I think KIS 2012 does this too.

Great protection, though.

 

Is 1 hour for full scan too long for you? Please keep in mind that KIS by default scan all files (despite their extension), and i.e unpack and scan iso files and other formats. As far I know avast (which is one of my favorite) just scan programs and dll's.
Previous version of KIS on my mid-end system were indeed slow and bloated. And KIS 2010 scan my 500gb for 8 hours and it was sloow.

 

Not sure what is happening then because the Full Scan on my system has the following stats:

(events: 569, objects: 832360, time: 00:44:49)

which I consider to be 'excellent'.

Less events but more objects in less time? For the record I use the scan by Format setting (which I as understand it is a compromise between scanning All and by Extension).

Perhaps a hardware based reason?

I don't think it will be hardware-based. I am on a laptop with a Intel Core 2 Duo 2.53 Ghz with 4GB DDR3 RAM. Next to that my pc wasn't performing any other intensive tasks at the moment of scanning, I was just working in Word.

And like I said, it is only scanning slow in the system32 (and some other important) folder, and especially on some dll's and regedit.exe and notepad.exe. If it has completed those it start scanning really quick.

 

I too believe KIS 2012 is a huge step up from the 2011 version.

I've witnessed much faster virus scans (both quick and full), RAM and CPU usage are both lower and database download speeds are much faster. The GUI is much improved, not that I look at it all that often and the addition of a "cloud based" check is one add-on that has merit along with the already introduced "run safe" sandbox.

I am running a quad core (i5 750), also with 4 GB DDR3 RAM, so whilst there may be some difference due to power I think that it may be your scan by setting that is causing the difference.

Let us know what the scan by format comes up as. I will try a custom scan on just the System32 folder and see what that give.

As advised earlier I have run a custom scan of System32 folder, which completed with following stats:

(events: 2, objects: 14137, time: 00:02:29) with By Format option.

and that was with both Thunderbird & Opera open/being used.

Correct me if I am wrong but I think that is pretty fast?

 

I had that problem on some PC's too, with 2010 and 2011, but haven't tried 2012 outside of a VM yet. I think it had something to do with the slow rootkit scanning that was a problem in 2010 and a bit in 2011, I had a ticket open with Kaspersky support, but they couldn't find the source and they just stopped replying after a while so I just gave up.

Hopefully KIS 2012 will be good news for you as a Rootkit Scan on my system has the following stats:

(events: 30, objects: 1961, time: 00:08:16)

Certainly this is better that either 2010 or 2011, in my experience.
