Avira Question

I just downloaded the FREE version of Avira from their website, and installed it.

But it says I have version: 10.0.0.648

But I thought the latest FREE version is 12?

And when I open Avira, it says, "Your Product is activated until 1/09/2011.

But why is the FREE version only activated until 1/9/2011, seeing it says, "Licensee: Avira AntiVir Personal - FREE Antivirus?

 

There is no v12 yet. Only rumors. - v10 is correct as this is the current version. - And regarding the license .. I saw that recently and wondered too! - My guess is that can be prolonged later. Don't know though why they do that.

 

Well it's very strange indeed. It says the licensee is FREE yet it says it expires 1/9/2011.

SO what happens on the 2/9/2011?

 

I am not using the free version myself, so I can't help. But I saw it on another machine recently and my guess would be it can and will be prolonged but maybe they want to make you an offer to buy premium version more often? Who knows. I don't. - But that license "time out" would not keep me from using it. - If nothing else works you could in a few months uninstall the current version and just install it again. License should be prolonged then anyway, right? - But maybe other users here know more about that license thing in the free avira version and how it works exactly.

 

It will renew by itself a few days before it expires.

I have another question:

Sometimes I play online game, and wondered if I can disable Avira when playing online games as I think Avira may be hogging valuable resources needed for smooth online gaming?

 

Thanks for this information! - I could imagine that some avira free users are getting nervous by this "countdown" ("Am I gonna be protected after that date? Is free version trial period now over?" etc.) and are just buying premium version because they don't know of course the free version will be prolonged automatically. Just an idea what *could* be behind all that.

Well, I bought Premium back then because I had enough of slow updates of free version. - I guess it makes no difference how they make you buy the premium version (or suite).

And no .. of course I wouldn't like to miss the additional webguard protection and faster/more frequent updates (better servers). ProActive on the other hand was no reason so far to spend any money.

You could disable the guard, yes. (Right click on umbrella I think! ) - But then you aren't protected of course.

 

I am using free to, can't wait for 12, is there a new GUI?

 

Just right click on the tray icon and you'll see "AntiVir Guard enable" checked. Uncheck it while you play if you think that'll help...
