I assume it's a virus or worm

My computer restarts on it's own, a couple of times per day... every few hours.

I've updated my anti-virus and run it... says I'm clean.
I've went on other virus-detection company sites and run their free virus scan, they say I'm clean as well.

I was sure it was the highly publicized sasser, even ran the symantec removal tool... it says it doesn't find it on my computer.

And still, my computer re-starts once in a while... it's mostly just annoying but when I'm working on something and can't save my work it's very aggravating.

Anyone have any idea what the problem could potentially be and how I could fix this?

I've also run Spybot, Ad-Aware... nothing.
I don't know what else to do.

    thanks

    Hi,

I would make sure that your computer isn't in an enclosed space, and that your power supply and case fans are working correctly. Make sure also that you don't have the computer sitting on thick carpeting, etc., because the problem as you describe it can sometimes be caused by a heat problem inside the case.

    Good luck. ;)

Thank you for the tip, I'm new here and didn't know how to proceed... I have just posted my hijack log in the appropriate thread as you suggested.

That might just what was hapenning... thanks for hint.

I've now changed the setting, I'll see in the coming days if the restarts persist or not.

I have a pretty larger tower with lots of open space inside, and 2 fans in the back... so I never considered an overheat problem.
That said it is set up in a corner, so maybe it's having problem breathing a little.

I've been told to check to see if the sides of my tower seem warm when my computer restarts... and I will do so next time it happens.
    Hopefully it won't ;)

Don't forget windows update. You probably already know this. They had a fix for your restart problem. I had the same problem at one time.

I run the Windows Update regularly, and just did it again now, and it says there are no updates available... I'm up to date.

Unless it's a fix I have to go get manually somewhere on the Microsoft site, I think I'm ok on that front.

I'm hoping your tip about checking off the automatic restart will do the trick, I also just uninstalled a memory program called RAM Idle which I was told can cause a conflict with XP's memory management and lead to restarts.

Btw.. the whole reason I installed that RAM Idle program was because I seemed to be having memory leaks. Even when I'd close a few programs so my remaining applications could run normally, they'd still run slow.
I'd have to restart the computer to regain the memory and have the computer run at normal speed.

Any tips for that?.. RAM Idle wasn't helping the problem anyway.

If you still have blue screens, you may have some bad ram. Happened to me.
