DNS Leaks...

Is there a relatively easy-to-use bit of software to check your browser for DNS leaks when using Tor? I use an ADSL modem; don't know if that makes any difference? Thx.

 

When you use Tor, make sure you are using the Firefox browsrwith the Torbutton add-on. That said, with Torbutton enabled - make sure that the about:config webpage for Firefox indicates that the field network.proxy.socks_remote_dns is set to True.

This will cause the Tor http request to be deferred thru to the Tor exit node's DNS server - i.e. no leak on client side.

Correction make sure your using Firefox with Socks enabled. Opera doesn't support socks so its a big no no.

Thanks Spooony, how do I know that Socks is enabled in Firefox? I'm a noob to all this stuff.

 

Btw Tom, I am trying the Tor/Polipo/Torbutton/FF v3.6 bundle that you recommended. Thx.

 

Also you can easily use Wireshark to check for DNS leaks.

 

If I use JanusVM to connect to TOR, do i need to worry about DNS leaks?

Don't know why no one mentioned it, but as an extra added precaution you should be using a Primary and Secondary DNS of your choice in your own network as a backup in case of any failures elsewhere....

Also especially when you are not just using Tor but other services, etc...
