Another Fedora spoon, I mean fork, oh that was so unfunny. Anyhow, here's a review of Fuduntu, a Fedora spin with Gnome desktop designed to be in between Fedora and Ubuntu, covering topics like live session, installation and post-install usage, Wireless, Bluetooth, Samba, look & feel, theme integration, desktop effects, multimedia - Flash, Video, MP3 playback, Microsoft Media Server (MMS), Apple trailers (QuickTime), applications choice, printing, stability, system resources, problems, suspend & resume, and more.

    Cheers,
    Mrk

Neither Fusion Linux or Fuduntu is perfect out of the box... but if they get better, they could become the alternative to the ubiquitous Ubuntu and Mandriva derivative distros out there!

Desperately-needed alternatives, given what Ubuntu is becoming.

Again great quality reviews of yours

    [MOVE]Thanks Mrkvonic[/MOVE]

so far look like that from your review

fununtu without selinux or selinux disable stability + less software +awn looks cheap+ wired theme + partition on ext3 +out of box experience

fusion with selinux enable some crashes + installation problem on external usb + too much beta stuff + mintmenu + startup script + much tweaks and out of box experience

i think both need time to mature like mint but both look great future ahead

    Hi Mrk,

Have you ever heard of the Spork - a cross between a spoon and a fork!

    So, maybe a Fedora spork?

I joined this forum just to let you know that I love this, and I'm stealing it. Fuduntu is a Fedora spork.

Thanks for the bit of humor!

Thanks for the review, while I could spend a few minutes debating some of the things in it, I don't think there is value in that (except that our focus is portables and you didn't talk about that enough! /kidding).

Instead, I bookmarked it and will continue to review it and fix problems that you found. :D

I have already fixed one (the bottom panel chooser has been reworded), and we are voting on replacing EXT3 with EXT4 in Fuduntu 14.10. It wasn't really something sloppy, when I created Fuduntu I still didn't trust EXT4 so I built the live media intentionally using EXT3.

This unfortunately required that all users that choose to install also use EXT3. As it stands, it looks like we are going to have the votes, to change over to EXT4. Once I get the last of the bugs worked out of the non-live installable media it won't matter what FS anyone uses.

If you are still using it, and find more problems feel free to let us know and we'll try our best to at least take some of the pain out of them.

welcome to forums fewt please would you like to tell us more about Fuduntu

in terms of support life cycle and gnome2.3x support

at end of day most linux users are looks for some basic things

stability, eyecandy, long term support, gnome 2.3x series

theme and wallpaper part more work needed to do most of us things that's a small thing no big deal users can change it.

but as newbie point of view 1st impression does matter no matter how good your distro is on core if it have bad theme or look dull at default many users drop it.

also it great if you tell us about a support cycle as users who serious about to install your distro dont want to format their pc every 6 months

also awn problem can be solved by running

install and running xcompmgr on startup

same problem i face in xfce of ubuntu and fedora what i did is i install xcompmrg and add script to start up it work as charm even on live cd if you run that

    Sure.

The original plan was to shift to Fedora 15 as our base when it was released, but I really wasn't happy with it as it is missing a lot of things that users currently take for granted (such as Appearance Preferences).

So, we are currently going to stick to basing on 14 for a while longer. In the meantime I'm actively researching alternative desktops and if I find one that works, the Fuduntu community will vote on their preference. I would like to stick to GNOME 2.x forever, but that isn't realistic.

The wallpaper is selected at random from a set imported from a few artists. They may not be pleasing to everyone (and that's OK) but I liked them, and they seemed to fit at the time. The default theme is actually a fork of a couple of other themes, I spent a few days on it but yes it could also be improved I'm sure.

I don't think it's that bad, there aren't a lot of comments about hating the theme, quite the opposite normally.

It was intended to follow Fedora releases, however with GNOME 3, it will continue to follow the Fedora 14 lifecycle for now.

I'm not sure what the AWN problem is.

    Hope this helps!

FYI fixed a bunch of stuff that was pointed out in the review.

    • The wallpaper is no longer random, and is now set to the logo wallpaper on first login.
    • The theme has been improved, and also updated to correct the panel window.
    • Totem-Mozilla has been removed (so you shouldn't see an error with quicktime), but unfortunately I haven't fixed the quicktime or MMS plugin problems yet.
    • We now use EXT4 by default.
    • The installation media has been trimmed to less than 1GB.
    • Likewise Open is no longer installed by default (but easily added via our new customization tool).
    • Resource utilization is down to around 160MB on startup.

No worries, I just wanted to follow up to let you all know that we took the Dedoimedo review seriously, and took action based on the feedback. :)

Dedoimedo may have to update the review just to check out the new tools and provide more feedback.
