KIS 2012 - Public Beta

Luckily isnt just the GUI.

Fast? i felt like i'm using 5 years old machine, not X58 based corei7 @3.8 + SSD etc, when i try it. Programs launched slow, update was eating my cpu, full scan was making my pc crowl. Kaspersky is heavy..always have been and seems that isuees is still present. And yes i tried 4 different beta versions of 2012 till now, all made noticable impact on my powerfull system.

 

With Application verifier and traces disabled?

 

Nope, i used the default settings in my testing, didnt changed anything, should i?

 

If you're looking to get even close to what the performance aspect of KIS will be like when it's released, you should disable Application verifier by going to regedit, locating "Image file execution options" and deleting "avp.exe" from the list (in SysWow branch if you're on 64bit; requires disabled Self-defense in KIS options and reboot of the system or KIS) as it serves as advanced debug purpose during beta testing, which results in ~5 times slower operation of system/product.
Traces are disabled from Support>support tools>Traces from the main UI, which also add a slight overhead to performance, more so when coupled with Application verifier.
Have in mind that since betas aren't finished products, even when disabling the abovementioned, performance could change for the better in Technical release (non-beta).

 

Thanks! will try it, so thats why Kaspersky destroyed my system lol! but on the other hand, 2011 version is also quite slower then CIS/NIS/NAV, to bad.. KIS has an amazing protection and its the only paid product which would get my money together with NIS/NAV, but the system slowdowns made me avoid it in the past, installing NIS on my system after KIS 2011 was like i'm using freshly formated system, i'm talking about 2011 versions.

 

KIS 2012 (without the verifier and traces) is a bit faster than 2011 for me, but only a bit (still slower than many others). The slowdown hasn't been a large problem for me though.

If you've been waiting for the beta to get relatively stable to install for a testrun, now is probably a good time to try it out.

 

I haven't tried it outside of a virtual machine but from what I am seeing it looks as good as a finished product.

 

I was able to carry out a custom install on previous betas but not this one

Custom install won't be available in the release. It might be possible to still do it via some msiexec commandlines, changing registry keys etc. but those aren't officially supported.

Disappointing-one of the reasons why I dropped KAV/KIS. Became too bloated for me, as AVs are not my main defense.

 

That and the very poor quality of commercially released products early in the 2010 and 2011 life-cycles were the reasons for me. I no longer use real time AV but as I was a Kaspersky user since version 4 thought I'd have a look at this one.

This is in my opinion the best Kaspersky version in years. The GUI errors aside it is better than the previous 3 years first commercial releases I think.

It is lighter than previous particularly if you only scan new and changed and complete a full scan before using in anger. It is also very secure with some tweaking (out of the box is for users who don't like to make decisions but AI decisions by any product introduces risk IMO) again particularly disabling automatic decisions and disabling HIPS heuristic analysis in favour of a restricted choice for unknown apps. HIPS is better, firewall is good and KSN finally beginning to live up to its potential.

First off I'm not suggesting KIS 2012 is light compared to other apps just previous KIS products for me, your mileage may be different. The file anti-virus, which is scanning the system as you work, by default only scans new or changed files. This means a file will only be scanned once unless it changes. If you run a full scan it cuts down on the amount of scanning going on while you work thereby reducing the impact on the system. Wait till it finishes though before doing anything, a full scan is resource intensive, and reboot a couple of times.

If you are having issues you should try de-selecting Perform idle scan and Perform regular rootkit scan also in the Scan General Settings or setting to only scan on execution in File anti-virus settings. It might help but there are lots of inherent system variables around performance though so.......

as with the last three kaspersky versions, system is noticeably slower at boot than any other av on both my vista and windows 7 machines. By the time I have disabled everything I don't use I am probably safer using windows defender. It seems to me after v4 KL took a turn they can't find a way out of, or maybe this is what some people like, not me.

 

Boot is not the only issue, system is generally as a whole noticable slower. But hey KIS is very strong product (firewall and HIPS modules are great) and also i would rank it as one of the most complete products together with NIS and CIS, and just cause of this fact they can get away with the slowdowns IMHO if it was other product i wont even think about using it, neither follow their products progression.

 

I think with v2012 your complaints should go. This is the memory usage in their latest beta in Win7 x64

 

Take a look at the CPU time, I/O Reads and Writes

 

Only memory usage tells nothing (and for me it actually uses a bit more RAM than 2011, although the product overally is a bit faster). Looking at all the values also tells little, benchmarking and the overall feel is more important.

That is now up to the marketeers at Kaspersky. Only they will know that so there is no point asking here. But going by previous releases the launch will most probably be staged by region so some will get access to it before others...depending on where you live.
