In the On-Demand test at least, I know that Avira and others requested it.

    Uhm...

Oh really? They are not doing that yet? I hazard to guess they do test their malware against all major AVs pretty much daily. Security by obscurity never worked.

    Agreed.
Some of the big boys even test every single hour, according to a 'GangstaBucks TDL4 affiliates' info screenshot that is. link.

Avast could have done even better if behavior shield settings were changed. The default action is to auto decide but i think the safest choice is 'ask' .

Why do the dynamic tests use out-of-the-box settings while the detection test uses maximum (or vendor choice) settings?

No, I saw that and read the document, but I don't recall seeing an answer to my question in there. Can you be more specific?

Kaspersky and Norton are two best performers :)

This kind of test aims to simulate a real-world condition

Well, in that it surely fails, because regardless of whether it's downloading a file or running a scan, default settings are what 99% of people will be using. Hence my question.

Now I've read in the on-demand scan test it's to level the playing field, remove custom behaviour where scan criteria are upped on a match, etc. Yet I'm not really sure I understand how that gels with the dynamic testing, and also makes the two tests hard to compare in a meaningful way since they're using completely different AV settings.
