Linux Network Help

I swapped my netbook over to Fedora 14 "Laughlin" and now I cant access my gaming laptop with LnS installed. If I disable LnS the shared HD shows up properly. With it on I cant access it at all.

 

Any hint from your log file in LnS? I assume you are using the shared folder/printer rule in LnS ??

Shared folder and shared printer. Here is the layout. My gaming laptop has LnS. It also has the external 1.5TB HD with the shared folders and printers through a powered USB hub.

If I disable LnS the Linux netbook can access the shared folders, but the Gaming laptop cant access the shared Linux folder. If LnS is on, neither can see each other.

EDIT- Just checked again and after rechecking and enabling internet filtering with no added rules Fedora can access the shared drives no problem.

Now all thats left is to get the printer working.

 

Not sure, whether or not you have to permit SMB (samba) traffic in your Linux firewall. Since shared folders are working, it is unlikely that you need to allow printer sharing in addition.

In Linux it can be difficult connecting to a network printer via Windows shares. You should use the SMB protocol and have the correct IP-address and printer driver ready (in my case it is a *.ppd file).
I could doublecheck my settings in OpenSuse Linux for a DELL network printer tomorrow...

I used Samba to configure the FW for the shares in Fedora. I use an HP Deskjet F2430. Hopefully they have something in the repository for it.

 

Here I used "Cups" to configure my remote network printer
(CUPS requires UDP port 631 to be open on the Linux machine):

I used the following command:
smb://<workgroup>/<IP of print host>/<shared printer name>

CUPS will test, if you can conect to the shared networt printer.
If yes, you still need the correct driver... in case of a postscript printer you can try using the "*.ppt" file of the Windows printer driver...

How do I find the IP of my printer? Its configured through USB on one of my laptops. Would it just be the laptop static IP?

 

The shared printer has no IP. The computer, who shares the printer to others, has an IP. This one is the one you need to know.

The command in Linux may look like:
smb://<MyNetwork>/<169.168.100.1>/<MySharedPrinter>

Here in my example:
Workgroup name of the Windows network: "MyNetwork"
IP of computer that is directly connected to the printer: "169.168.100.1"
name of network printer (defined by yourself through Windows printer sharing): "MySharedPrinter"

The only thing is: Are you sure you connected your printer via Windows shares? In these days more and more printers include software to get their own IP within a network. In this case the SMB-protocol might not work.

100% positive the printer is shared through Windows Share Permissions. Only thing I use the HP software for is the GUI for scanning pictures and documents.

 

Tried through CUPS and it was a no go. Not sure whats wrong, but this is exactly the reason I dont use Linux. Way to hard to configure things that should be a piece of cake.

 

Sorry for the trouble with your network printer. Actually, Linux is much better to use than Windows when it comes to network stuff.

I am not familiar with Feodora, my OpenSuse has an assistent that guides you through the installation process and makes some test prints etc...

Maybe you should check some Feodora web forums on this issue, there might be some help from this side. Otherwise I would decativate LnS while you try to connect to the network printer.
