In some websites, such as -http://www.filehippo and -http://www.softpedia.com, I see mentions to Java 6 Update 25, but going to Java's website, I see the version being offered is still version 6 Update 24.

But, if you go to -http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html Java 6 Update 25 is available to download.

    Release notes -http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/6u25releasenotes-356444.html

I always get update downloads direct from Sun/Oracle, so I can get the offline version. And I agree, as of a minute or two ago their site was still showing 24 as the current version.

Possibly the download itself is actually U25, wouldn't be the first time that's happened. If you want to try downloading (I didn't bother, though it can always be cancelled), the update version is included in the installer's file name.

Unless I am misunderstanding the release notes posted at FileHippo this version does include security updates, see highlighted entry below:

    # Olson Data 2011b
    * Java SE 6u25 contains Olson time zone data version 2011b.

    # Additional Supported System Configurations
    * For Java SE 6u25, support has been added for the following system configurations:
    - Oracle Linux 6
    - Oracle Solaris 11 Express 2010.11
    - Windows 7 with SP1
    - Windows 2008 R2 with SP1
    - Internet Explorer 9
    - Firefox 4
    - Chrome 10
    - VirtualBox 4

    # Java Hotspot VM 20
    * Java SE 6u25 includes version 20 of the Java HotSpot Virtual Machine which contains improvements to performance, reliability and diagnostic information.

    # Performance Improvement to BigDecimal
    * Improvements have been made to class BigDecimal enhancing its performance by thirty percent. BigDecimal is enabled by specifying -XX:+AggressiveOpts command option.

    # Performance Improvement to java.util.logging.LogRecord
    * The performance of the class java.util.logging.LogRecord has been enhanced. This enhancement improves the efficiency of including source class and method names in java.util.logging log records.

    # Bug Fixes
[GLOW="Green"]* Fixes for security vulnerabilities beyond those in Java SE 6u24.[/GLOW]

I've seen this happen before with java.com saying I have the latest version installed when elsewhere a new build is available. Even invoking check for updates from within the java client says I have the latest version.

Check for updates from Java client is always late. That's why I always download and install.

Secunia PSI updates vulnerable Java and Flash versions automatically. ;)

The last time I reinstalled Windows I did not install Java and I haven't run across anything that I needed it for. So since I don't miss it I'm done with it. Now if we could just get to that point with Flash all would be right in the world. :argh:

Yeah, as long as it works correctly. On my XP system the following do no show up in the scan results:

    Silverlight 4.6.0.310
    JavaRE 6u25
    Microsoft Office 2003 (MS11-023 KB2509503)

Edit: New Silverlight and Java versions have no security fixes and therefore are not reported by PSI.
The Office 2003 detection is still broken though.

If you look at the release notes on the java site you will find:

    Bug Fixes

Java SE 6u25 does not add any fixes for security vulnerabilities beyond those in Java SE 6u24. Users who have Java SE 6u24 have the latest security fixes and do not need to upgrade to this release to be current on security fixes.

So much for Filehippo's accuracy :D
