As a result of the incessant trolling that occurs here from one pathological individual I have decided to hang it up here at Wilders. I received a PM from another regular poster that he was doing the same thing, so I decided to follow suit. I think I have already gotten my own thoughts across about privacy and security on the 'net (for however little it might be worth), so there's not much reason to hang around anyway. I am not the first poster that has left because of this and I am sure I wont be the last.

I presume most of you know who the troll (under his many screen names) I am referring to is. The guy eats, sleeps and breathes trolling Usenet. I am all for some humorous trolling once in a while, but this guy isn't even the slightest bit funny. I mean, really dude, I have seen 14 year olds on 4chan whose comedic chops put you to shame. Cutting and pasting threads from here to Usenet is a real belly splitter, I tell ya. o_O

For those of you that provide your real names to a forum like this -- you're stupid (I say that with the utmost respect, of course). I hope you now can see why.

I wouldn't throw the towel in yet mate. I find that the 'ignore' button works quite well. I only have one person on ignore here, & they deserved it. I don't need to see their posts. Don't let the trolls get you down! :)

well, to help some of us, can you please describe trolling. I have been guilty of everything else here and to make sure that I dont knowingly do this, it would help to know exactly what it is. I know fanboy, but I ask with all sincerity.

    @ chronomatic

I for one would Very much miss your contributions here, if you did leave :(

Don't let THAT multiple personality disorder b'stard get you down. He would only take great delight in thinking he had got to you, so DON'T give him the satisfaction. We all have our off days, me included ;) so i would put your feelings down to that, rise above it, and carry on wiser & stronger :) :thumb: And in future don't allow nutcases to get to you :thumb:

    Please stay :)

Apparantly, there is a section or two on Usenet where some guy has been spoofing WSF threads... copying lots of the text, posting as each of the players from our threads, but, changing some things to joke around, insult or troll us. The first couple times someone sent me a link I read some of it, but, after realizing how stupid it all was, I stopped bothering. (It was after reading that somehow I demanded oral sex from him or he'd be banned. I'm still wondering how someone gets oral sex via the Internet. Maybe I need a better PC to accomplish that. :argh: )

Anyway, the same guy has had a few accounts here, posting back and forth among himself, and trying to fool people into taking sides, lying from one side or the other, all to stir up trouble and make a "big splash". Oh, for those of you forwarding PM and emails to me from either "him" or any alter ego, or other "involved parties", you can stop now. I don't care what he says. It's all crap and a big "put on" to see what kind of effect he can create. If you've believed anything he has said, you've been fooled. If you've been following links over to the spoof threads on usenet, you are wasting your time. Anyone of serious technical interests would not read those particular threads. It's just a Wild West out there where anyone can post anything they want, and giggle to themselves that they actually got to post swears. Wow!

As for posts actually happening here, we review all the content posted, especially when Reported as Bad Posts, and are not concerned that things will get too far off-topic here. As said above, report to us if there is a public post that is concerning, or a member going too far, and we'll look into it. Also, make use of the ignore feature for those members who you consider borderline.

    I didn't expect this.

I was just going to quit quietly, but since chronomatic had the guts to post this, I felt I should chime in. I sent the PM to chronomatic, and I agree with the sentiment.

I've let the moderators know repeatedly what I think, so no need to repeat it.

    Bye.

Not you as well ? :( Why allow it to get you down too ? You also post very informative etc stuff, so your leaving would also be a loss to MOST of us. Ignore the dickhead, or just laugh at him :thumb:

While I don't have anywhere near the issue Chrono is having, I certainly have begun seeing a lot more of "big mouth, little brain" around here lately, and a few cases of some off-topic posters getting away with a little more than others. I have my frustrations (and god knows I'm guilty of opening my mouth at times too, I'm a human), but overall I've yet to find a more informative security website than Wilders. That is, if you're willing to wade through a lot of BS to get to that information (God help you if you're searching "best browser"). I hate to see you go, Chrono, but I completely understand. As to posting real names, I agree. If anyone should know better than to allow that kind of private information on general websites like this, it should be Wilders users.

I too have been making much more use of the ignore function. Thankfully a few of the big offenders have either packed their bags or are on hiatus. It is a nice little function, and if you're afraid they might have said something useful for once in their life, you can unhide their particular posts.

thanks Mike, I dont think that is something I will be found guilty of, in the near future.:)

chronomatic, stick around. This place isnt always perfect but some of the best folks I have ever gotten to know, reside here. I feel the Admin and Mods do a job that there are not enough thanks for and even though we live all over this globe, we are like a familly. It really is ashame the rest of the world cant observe how we all lay aside all of our so-called differences to come together. There are times when I sometimes I even forget that this place is represented by so many cultures and nations. It feels like local venue due to the generousity and kindness of the members, site folks, and vendors.:thumb:

chronomatic, your posts are some of the best, most informative (for me anyway) I see on a regular basis, especially in the Linux forum where your knowledge is clearly way above average.

As for the mods, they have a tough job catching everything, and they are not getting paid for it either, they're volunteering out of the goodness of their hearts, so they should be cut some slack :)

    Ha-ha...same here ;) :D

I must have missed something somewhere along the way. Sorry to see anyone who is sincere in helping or learning decide enough is enough. I will continue to ignore whatever it was I must have ignored, I guess.

I wasn't very clear. It's not the Usenet parody/spoof/mock that bothers me. It's that this individual is here, stirring the pot to get more material with which to mock us. I've told the moderators repeatedly who it is, that it's one guy, that he's being about as overt as possible.

This thread here is a perfect example:

    http://groups.google.com/group/alt.privacy.anon-server/browse_thread/thread/95aacbee6a2dafa6#

I know very well who participated in this thread. Hint: it's all one guy, playing every part..

I'll be d*mned if I'm going to let this guy poke sticks at me here, then use the material he gets here to poke sticks at me over there.

He takes repeated jabs at myself and anyone who stands up to him not only on Usenet but here on this forum.

This thread on this forum is a perfect example of trolling:

    https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=297068

I've spoken to the author of the original post, Jeff Golberg (his real name), and I don't think he was happy with the way his post was treated.

Even down to the spelling of the word "ToR", the whole thing is an exercise in getting a response from us. Why would anyone purposely take a post where the word was spelled "tor" and modify it to "ToR", every single time. It makes no sense unless you were here back in October. If you were here in October, then it makes perfect sense.

The author of the post was clearly identified as Jeff Goldberg. Why was it attributed to "Mr. Silverstein". It's again solely a means to get a response.

This great post by Jeff is massacred here on this forum with hardly anyone paying attention. And Jeff was unable to post to the thread because of some problem posting to this forum. He told me he was unwilling to expend any great effort troubleshooting. I did everything I could to ask the moderators to let him post, but I heard nothing.

Great people like Jeff have trouble posting to this forum, but trolls can just breeze through.

Sorry to say, truth is, this thread does little else other than perpetuate the troll's myth.

Therein lies the thing with regards to trolls; if you don't give them a response, they'll have nothing to come back with. Seriously, if it's blatantly obvious that the user is trolling, don't give them the satisfaction or, as has already been suggested, simply use the ignore feature.

Yes, it does. And with that, we're closed.

If anyone feels that this forum is no longer the place for them, for whatever reason, then they certainly should leave. Why stay somewhere that has no interest or value for you any longer? People grow, people change, some people come, some people move on. So, for those arriving, welcome. For those leaving, we wish you all the best. And, if one day you return, we'll be here.
