BitDefender Free Antivirus 2011

I spotted this on the Malwarebytes forums, BitDefender Free Antivirus 2011, for now only in Romanian. According to Google translation it uses the same scanning engine as the other BitDefender products to provide basic protection, so it looks like just all extra features are removed.

It would be nice to see BitDefender releasing this free edition for all languages, considering they have been doing quite well the last time in the comparatives, also they seemed to have fixed lots of bugs, problems and performance issues.

BitDefender Free Antivirus has been out for quite a long time, though it was recently only in Portugeuse.

Interesting... The URL you provided for BitDefender 2011 Free Portuguese version shows contradictory information.

At the top, it says it provides Antivirus, Anti-Phishing, Anti-Rootkit and
on-access scan.

But, checking the comparison table, anti-phishing protection isn't part of the free version.

Has anyone confirmed whether or not it provides anti-phishing protection?

 

The anti-phishing works in the free version as the installer has it checkmarked and victorh2007 (on youtube) tested this product.

If this thing doesn't have on-access, it's useless.

 

Why is Bitdefender put useless products out and scamming the public. They are doing users a disservice by giving them a false sense of security.

 

I would like to point out that there are still people out there seeking for purely on-demand scanners.

 

This version provides real-time protection, just do not have access to any advanced settings, you can only enable and disable protection

So it does have an on-access part? Any idea to what extent? Signatures only or the same as paid version, just without any settings.

 

Let me try to explain because I have researched this some. The languages that have gotten the new 2011 versions do get the on-access protection in the free version. The difference between the paid version I do not know. So far not all the languages have gotten the new 2011 version, for example if you go download the English version (last time I checked) you will still get the older version and not one with real time protection.

It is unknown if all languages will get the on-access version or if its only for a few countries. If you look on YouTube you can find some tests on the free version that has real time protection, but it will be in another language.

Just 2009 one (purely on-demand thing). As noted above, they need to get their act together and release at minimum English version at the same time as Romanian. Or perhaps they are not interested in global customers?

 

Perhaps they just want to market their products and brand name in Romania and Brazil? And perhaps they think that in the English speaking countries the customers already know their brand name?
