Scanning on start up

Have 2 PC's at home and with the 3 User ESET SS.
one is XP SP3
& other is Win 7 Home prem- 64 bit -SP1

Win 7 working fine.
XP when I boot up and after a minute of seeing the full desktop, the ESET wants to scan for virus's - even though I only have a Weekly schedule.
Is there an automatic daily scan that I overlooked? I don't see one under
Tools/Scheduler.

 

Maybe it's the Start-up scan that you are talking about?
It runs automatically at every Windows logon.
Although it shouldn't take over a minute for the Start-up scan to start, it should be done by then.

 

you might be right- its just that I only see this on the XP machine- and it seems more like a full scan, takes about 45 minutes, as is the weekly scan.

On my Win 7 PC, if there is a start up scan its in the back ground and not seeing it.

 

Then it's NOT a start-up scan. The start-up scan should be done within 1 Min.

Can you tell what checkboxes you have checked in the scheduler?

 

I myself have had this issue also in the past and found that if you keep the regular updates checked and clear all the other box's like scan on startup this problem will go away.
In my view, which may or may not be what others believe, that if you have active protection running and do a weekly full scan, as you mentioned, then the startup scan is NOT needed and more annoying than anything.

 

Double click the ESET Icon on the taskbar, then go to options, and enable advanced options

Then from the left pane, click on Tools, then Scheduler, then unchekc the 4the 4th box which says Automatic Startup Scan on USer Logon...not needed

I just leave the 5th option on though to have ESET Smart Security scan my start up files after a successful update, you never notice that

 

Wow is that not what I said? As for the startup files being scanned, why the need if you have active protect enabled? Sorry I still find this unnecessary to scan every single time you start the pc. Redundancy is a good thing sometimes, however there is point where you have to wonder if this is just silly or do I really need to do this. That is a question that only the end user can answer.

1. Log Maintenance
2. Regular auto update
3. auto update after dial up (not sure why checked as have DSL)
4. auto update after user login
5. automatic startup file check - user login
6. automatic startup file check - succesful update of virus database
7. My weekly scan (which I set up).

 

Why the Start-up scan is essential has been explained many times before.
And how do you find it annoying if I may ask?

 

Just because software has the capability and has something set by default does not mean it is correct or even required. Just an example would be some of the software suites that include Parental Controls. Now they are included and in some cases even active by default. Does this make them needed for ever person? I don't think so.

I find the option in XP, and I'll repeat that, "IN XP" does seem to drag the system down some in certain systems. Does this mean in all systems, NO. But in some it does. I have yet to find this issue in Windows 7 so maybe thats been resolved in that OS.

I have read some of the discussions on this topic and it has been discussed before that it may not be needed but recommended. But on that same token it is recommended to have Antivirus installed and active, but its not required.
Again I'll point out that its the end user who makes the final call on this. All I am doing is pointing out some issues and some work arounds.

 

OK here is what I recommend to have checked and uncheck the others. Log, Regular Update, and your private scan. Uncheck the others and restart. Now see if that resolves some of your issues.
If it does than we need to maybe look at the schedule of the scans. It is possible that the scans are running alongside some other process and fighting each other. If this is the case then it can be configured to be run at another time. But first lets see if this is indeed the issue.

SweX - its annoying as the scan can take up to 40 minutes and slows down the PC (is XP SP3)

It could perfectly be the weekly scan that is running at startup. Could you export settings into a XML file and PM me?

How can I import or export my ESET security product settings using an .xml file?

The startup scans are important, you could get infected with them disabled, and the threat will be run in the background without knowing that.

Note, since posting last, in the Scheduler I deleter the auto scan on dial up connection - we have DSL and unchecked the Sytem Check on start up (by Login User)

Your weekly scan is set to run at 2AM, and is set to run as soon as possible if it misses that time. So if your computer is not turned on monday morning at 2, it will scan on the next startup and continue doing so untill it finishes, starting over again the next week.

 

Is that a hidden scan?
I am not seeing it under the Scheduler.
I only see the one I set - for Monday's at 5pm.

Anyway, regardless of time, i'd suggest playing with the setting on the third screenshot.
