Looks like Webroot has released a product. There appears to be a paid and free version, the free version looks pretty good. I have been using the beta so I don't know if the free version is ad supported or not. But it looks to have many of the features of the paid product.

FWIW- it appears the beta version updated to the free version. I am not seeing any ads or any slowdown. I have not tested the remote locate/scream/lock or SMS filter. And I am waiting to see some detection ability results for malware. Assuming the remote features work as advertised and the detection is at least average or above, this product appears to be a winner.

 

I just installed the free version. I see that to locate or lock the phone you send a text message from another "Buddy" phone. It would be a lot more convenient if you could send a text from a computer. Any thoughts on this?

Let us know if it works for you. For the moment I dont have any AV solution installed. Id rather have performance and battery life than worry about something as dismal as malware on a Droid based phone. Sure its out there, but if you only download reputable software with loads of downloads and ratings you wont get infected. Atleast for the time being.

Thanks for this. By the way, it appears that the Dr Web Mobile product doesn't have the "locate and lock" features, is that correct?

 

I was able to send a text to the phone from my Google Voice account, so I tried the "Lock" command and the "Locate" command - they both worked. In order to unlock the phone I had to enter the Webroot password. The locate command resulted in an SMS sent back to Google Voice with a Google Maps link showing my phone's location - very cool. "Locate" also locks the phone. I didn't want to try the "scream" command, but I figure it should work too.

I'm not as interested in the AV as in the Lock and Locate features. The paid product supports remote "wipe" of personal data as well. I guess that would be a good idea as a last resort. A subscription only costs $15 a year, which is the most affordable I've seen for mobile security software.

 

I agree it would be easier and more convenient. We need a webroot password anyway, so why not? I'll try to make a post on their facebook page.

There is an Eset beta out but it's not available in the android market for download yet.

 

See my post #34. Sending a text message from Google Voice to the phone works. You can create a free Google Voice account and use it as the "Buddy" for sending security commands to the phone from a web browser. Practically speaking if you misplace your phone and don't have a friend's phone handy (who you entered in the Webroot buddy list) you can go to the nearest coffee shop with WiFi and boot a laptop to send the Lock and Locate commands. You're probably still going to need someone else' phone to use the Scream option to find the phone "in the field". If the phone has been stolen though the problem is obviously a lot more complicated, but at least a program like this gives you some control.

Many of the current apps, such as LookOut, have basically the same feature set. I'd like to try a few others, but I'm reluctant to use my phone for beta testing. Have you tried the ESET product?

 

Kaspersky Mobile Secure had an offer for life time license at around $6. It has remote location, lock, wipe, privacy features and antivirus worth a try

It is no longer available at that price, but it is still good for lifetime.

You can also try Webkey. It allows remote control of your phone from the net including remote wipe.

 

I've not been able to try the Eset product as it is not available in the Android Market. I actually would like to try out the free F-secure mobile anti-theft which has the basic features of locate, lock and wipe. But it's not available in the Market either, so I'm out of luck with it until it's added (which F-secure tells me they are in the process of doing).

I have AT&T and my phone is not rooted. I don't have the option to allow installs of programs outside the Android Market. I can't even install the apps from the Amazon market as AT&T does not allow it. I don't want to root my phone and void the warranty...so I am stuck with waiting for products to be added to the Market for now.

 

Interesting, I didn't know that. I'm with Verizon and they don't have that restriction. They have plenty of others though

 

Agreed, very good price. I installed the trial, which turned out to be 30 days so I'll use the Kaspersky product for a while and see how it is. One thing I notice is it doesn't seem to have the "Scream" feature.

It's very easy to root and unroot your phone (check XDA forums for your phone) and no one will be the wiser. Additionally, even if you can't download apps from Amazon currently, you can still pick up their free deals and then download and install them once AT&T fixes the issue (assuming you don't root).

 

good point about the amazon apps- I'll remember to do that. I'll most likely not root the phone for a little while yet- maybe sometime down the road I'll change my mind though.
