    Hi all,

I'm on Mac, I have a giganews account that allows me to have a vyprvpn connection : PPTP / L2TP / Openvpn (+5$/month).

I have well done with it and it works great (3 servers available 2US 1EU). But you can't change your IP (all time same from each server. And some site can find your browser, Os installed, language...

So i wonder if its not better to use TOR associated to Vyprvpn. then i will be able to switch my ip...

What do you think about that ?
Does it means i will have like a 2 layer protection ?
Does TOR must be master and vyprvpn slave or the opposite ?
Do i need to launch one programm before the other ?
    ...
Or do you think Vyprvpn is enough ?

Thank by advance for your precious help.

    Panpan

If you use a good VPN like Xerobank or some other comparable VPN, you won't need tor. Tor will slow you way the hell down. But I have used the Tor browser to change my IP on a forum occasionally. I don't disconnect the VPN and it works just fine. Although I sometimes wonder if the VPN providers care if you are running Tor through them.

I used to use Giganews in the past, and I was contemplating vyprvpn, but, from my recollection, they do logging.

Back in 2009 (when vyprvpn started) I took a look at their site, and I remember they stated that they maintained logs of your sessions. I'm not sure they stated how long at that time. Today, I looked at their site, and it seems like it's 90 days.

Giganews itself doesn't maintain any logs for downloads, and if you access their servers using SSL, there should be no record anywhere of what you download. So, accessing Giganews through Vyprvpn or any other VPN is probably pointless from a security perspective and will only slow down your downloads.

For that reason, I don't know why Giganews even offers a VPN, since there's no point in using the VPN when accessing Giganews. I guess the VPN could be useful when not using Giganews, but there are many VPNs that do less logging.

My opinion is that you won't get a huge security/anonymity advantage by using the VPN+Tor vs. Tor by itself. You'll get the same speed and maybe slightly greater anonymity. I think Tor gives you much better anonymity than the VPN, so adding the VPN should not have much effect.

If you launch the VPN normally then use Tor normally with your browser, basically you're running Tor within the VPN. Again, I don't think this is a huge advantage over Tor by itself. Maybe a slight advantage.

I don't know how you would run the VPN after Tor, but it would be a ridiculous idea anyway. You would lose all of the speed advantage of the VPN and all of the security/anonymity advantage of Tor. Again, I don't even know how you would do this and there's no advantage to it.

    Edit:

Sites can find your browser, OS, language, etc. when using Tor as well. Tor doesn't hide these things for you. Whether you use the VPN, Tor, or both, you have to do some filtering to prevent the site from being able to see these things. This is a whole topic by itself, so I won't elaborate here. But disabling or filtering javascript should help.

Enough for what? If you want to hide your IP, keep your ISP from spying, and have no record of your activity after 90 days, it's probably enough.

You can hide your browser, OS, etc. with the VPN (and not using Tor). Again, it's something better addressed as another topic.

    Hi "I no more".

A huge thanks for your enlightenment.

It's logical to me not to use my GN account with SSL in association with the VPN.

I'm a bit disappointed to learn that Vyprvpn practice logging...

So if i understand correctly its better to use TOR alone or a better VPN (without logging).

But i was wondering about the problems of TOR and the last node which have access to the real request without any encryption.

So i deduct that a good VPN is the best (faster connection, good encryption, anonimity)... Right ?

If i'm right which vpn provider can you advice me to use to be corectly protected, without logging and of course as less expensive as possible ? (ì eard good feedbacks from Openvpn but their website is not clear for me like price for a personnal computer, how subscribe... ).

    Thanks in advance.
    Panpan.

I can recommend Tor if you want anonymity, but not necessarily for privacy. I'll address this more later.

Regarding the VPN, I'm not sure I can really answer that. With Tor, you're not trusting any one entity. Your traffic is routed through multiple, random servers around the world. With a VPN, one entity controls all the servers, so you have to trust them. Even if they say they do no logging, how do you know?

If Vyprvpn says they do 90 days logging, you have no reason do believe or doubt them. 90 days logging isn't really that bad in my book, as long as they're being honest and everything is gone after 3 months.

If you need something with no logging, then it's best to find one that explicitly claims no logging (and hope they're telling the truth).

I currently don't use VPNs, so I can't recommend one, although there are many threads here on that topic.

This is a matter of trust. Keep in mind that if you use a VPN, they also have access to your unencrypted data.

As far as anonymity goes, this is not a concern. If I want to open an anonymous e-mail account and send someone an anonymous e-mail, then using Tor isn't a problem. I don't care if the last node can spy on this, as long as they don't know my real identity.

As far as privacy goes, this may be a concern. If I give out my real information over Tor (without using ssl), then the exit node can snoop on it. That's why Tor isn't recommended if you're going to be giving out your real information or using your real identity. Tor is not a privacy tool.

A trustworthy VPN would be the way to go if you're worried about privacy at a wi-fi hotspot for example.

If you find one that you trust. And, keep in mind, that I really have no reason to distrust Vyprvpn. Even if they do logging for a few months, that doesn't necessarily mean it's a reason to dump them. You have to ask yourself if this is acceptable to you. Everyone has different uses.

I personally will never consider a VPN to be as anonymous as Tor for the reasons I outlined earlier. But they may offer more privacy and definitely faster speeds. You have to balance all of this.

I'll leave this for others to answer.

I'm fine with Tor to access forums, e-mail, and Google. For usenet, I just use SSL with my regular connection. For anything else, I just use my regular connection and I don't even worry about it. Everyone's has different uses.

:thumb: Thank you a lot i understand now the gap between privacy and anonimity... its why before i was suggested to use both but you right becoming paranoiac is not the best solution. i will think peacefully about that and will find what fit to me.

If someone else want to give me another point of view he is welcome...

    Cheers.

Pan pan, if you have an https connection, I don't see why it would matter who was at that exit node because it would be an encrypted tunnel all the way through, right. Then Tor or a VPN would make you anonymous to the newsgroup. As for a VPN? There is none that I trust as much as Xerobank. Seriously. And I don't just mean the integrity of their service, I mean also the people who are involved in it. I consider them to be true advocates for freedom of speech and press, as well as privacy and anonymity.
