ESET for Windows generation 5, summary thread

How about a new product entitled Eset Total Security which can encompass everything. Like Norton 360 or Kaspersky Pure or.... you get the idea.

 

I guess you know that all other vendors include parental controls in their Internet Security suites? And if they have products such as Total Protection/Global Protection/PURE/360, those will have additional backup/tune up compared to the antivirus, antispyware, antispam, firewall, parental control, browsing protection, identity protection, virtual keyboard, network management, secure eraser or whatever is included in the Internet Security suite.

I don't have any problem with parental controls included in ESS, as long as it does not increase pc impact. If it does increase pc impact, I hope they will have an "install without parental control" option in the installer, just like F-Secure has.

To be honest I don't care how all vendors name everything, I want one integrated solution to protect me against security threats. The functions/modules/shields which don't protect me against security threats should be optional/removable.

 

Total that, total there, 360 here...waste of resources. Only useful thing in those suites could be the backup feature. Improve the core functions of todays product, my opinion.

 

This is my IMHO on ESET v5:

1) Parental Control. There are not thousands, there are millions of users who send their wishes on how ESET should evolve. Let's just have a little utopia fantasy in our minds - 51% of users wish to see Parental Control, 49% don't. What should ESET developers do? They cannot make everyone happy, so they develop ESET v5 according to the market situation and user wishes.

2) Sandbox - peace of crap (as for me). AV bases + heuristics + HIPS + Interactive firewall = no need of any sandboxing, I am not a paranoid with a hole in my head.

3) Total Security and other crap. Sorry, guys, but this is ****. PC TuneUp, Recovery, Password managers... Why the hell do they need to be in an AV product? Need PC TuneUP - use CCleaner. Recovery? Acronis True Image. Password Manager? Roboform. AV products should secure us from viruses and dumb people, not optimize our PC's.

 

Windows Vista and 7 have parental control, so why do we need it in an anti-virus product? The reason parental control, sandbox, password managers, and gadgets got into anti-virus products is that companies have to come out with yearly versions of their products, and they add these features to keep their product fresh. The "K" anti-virus is known to add junk to their products, with the stuff mention above, and starts the baseline for other competitors.

I agree, that sandbox is a piece of crap. Lets put it this way, the president walks down the street with body guards (anti-virus) is not enough, he needs to wear a heavy odd looking bullet proof vest (sandbox) to ensure his safety. Users should use a virtual machine + snapshots, if they really need to isolate malicious software from a PC.

Nowadays, the first thing that companies do as they create an anti-virus is to make sure they have the upcoming year beside their logo, fancy UI, and add junk.

 

Just because it's in there, doesn't mean you have to use it. For example, I don't use the update notifier for our computers here.

Fair point, but if a feature is in there then you're paying for it. I guess many people won't want to pay for features they'll never use.

You are only paying for it if there's a significant price increase in the product (not counting inflation/cola cost increase to the product)

 

Looks like they have updated their website to get prepared for the next generation of product for multiple platforms. If you look at details, you will see it looks more like the Beta screenshots posted in the first post, for example some scan icons and so on.

 

The new look and file of their website has been there for a while already, or do you mean something else?

 

Last time I checked, like two days ago, it had a different look.

So this is definately new, big changes are visible on the products pages (both for home and business) and download pages for example.

 

Yes indeed, I visited the site yesterday.
And today it's different for sure, and I really like the new layout.

 

I visited it last saturday to download the latest build of ESS, and it was already like this.(This is about eset.com)
