I use Diskeeper 2010 Standard and Enterprise (Server versions) at work on over 500 servers. It's OK...it's become overly bloated and every time they release a new version it's the same enchancements...like more reliable!...faster!...more efficient! When we run tests here (and we go extensive tests on live systems) we see no measureable difference. It does a decent job, and while I would love to look at an alternative, it's easier for management to just up the maintenance than remove it from 500 machines and install something new. When we fully test DK2011 I'll let you know how it goes.

This is exactly why I stopped using it a few years ago. I'm waiting or PD's beta.

In this comparison chart, the difference between the professional and pro primer edition is only the tetrabyte volume engine, but the price difference is huge. Is the tetrabyte volume engine that important?

Just wanted to add. I tried the pro premier 2011 and it appears to be identical to the pro premier 2010. Diskeeper should not be charging existing users for upgrade, instead they should give it as a free update to the 2010 version.

    Diskeeper 2011:

    NEW! Instant Defrag™ engine

For the first time ever, no newly fragmented files can slow performance, because Instant Defrag immediately defrags those files before they can be read. Instant Defrag is a new intelligence that understands how your files are used and ensures they never have to be read in fragments. Combined with IntelliWrite, every system runs at peak performance 24/7 regardless of workload. No system has ever been able to do this before!

    NEW! Efficient Mode.

In addition to an extensive defragmentation mode, Efficient Mode offers the greatest net gain in system I/O resource savings ever available. It is smart enough to know what fragmentation is a problem and immediately targets and eliminates fragmentation that directly affects system performance.

    NEW! Free space consolidation engine.

This new and advanced engine swiftly consolidates free space and tightly integrates with Instant Defrag to handle new fragmentation as soon as it is created.

    New! InvisiTasking

This exclusive technology can now use more idle resources faster for background optimization routines on even the busiest systems – with absolutely no intrusion on active system resources.

Perfect Disk gives free updates but I don't remember under what circumstances. I had PD10 pro and they sent me the beta of 11 and then sent me the pro non beta for free. Awesome company and awesome support.

Hey hayc59 I see that you have Hyper Fast so you must be using a SSD drive?

    Hi,

I'm the Director of Product Management at Diskeeper. How we promote, marketing-wise, may not properly communicate the reasons behind new features clearly. For example, in Diskeeper 2010 we introduced one major change - IntelliWrite. That technology prevents most fragmentation. While this means a fragment-free file system faster 9our ads promoted faster and more efficient), it actually allows for far better compatibility with many other software technologies. Anyone running "snapshots" or virtualization, will get far better interoperability. Most of the needs of IntelliWrite are in the enterprise space, but even many desktops need this. An example of that is VSS (Volume Shadow Copy Service). Defrag can grow the space used by VSS, but prevention does not.

At the end of the day, a defragmented file is a defragmented file. The exception being optimization features, like I-FAAST that can place files on HDD for faster access. The difference between solutions is CAN they defrag the mess, and HOW they defrag (e.g. resources required).

We do deprecate features to limit bloat (e.g. removed Screen Saver defrag, Smart Scheduling, Frag Shield) as their usefulness wanes. If you feel there is any bloat today, please send me a private message (open to any forum members). I can also be reached through the company blog: http://www.diskeeper.com/blog/ . Please note it may be some time before I can respond.

We build our products on user's requests and needs, so I appreciate constructive criticism - it's why I have a job.

    Hi,

Unless you have thousands of files taking up TB of space, the Terabyte Volume Engine (TVE) is probably not needed. It is more RAM friendly though. TVE replaces the default defrag engines on 60GB or larger volumes.

    Hi,

We do offer free updates within a major version (i.e. Diskeeper 2010). It's true that most changes, some 90% plus, are bug fixes and not new features.

We also have beta tests, and invite existing customers to sign up. We also reward those testers, as they are doing us a service, with software.

Does Diskeeper have any specific file placement technique apart from I-FAAST or does it just randomly compact everything at the end of the drive if I-FAAST is not present, anyone know?

I have been using Diskeeper for a few years. As far as I know there is no specific placement technique such as last accessed, last modified, etc.

I use it because after I install it, I never have to think about defragging again. The combination of intelliwrite, invisitask auto defragmentation, and Instant Defrag for all practical purposes keeps the disc defragmented.
