AV Suggestion for a House Full Of Kids

AppGuard would be a great choice. It can be password protected so that it can't be circumvented.

 

The accounts are locked down. There is the main admin account on the server. I setup permissions for the kids in their own LUA with parental controls. They only have access to what I want them to. They cant install anything new and they cant run anything thats restricted from them. I have Avast setup to detect PUP's and its password protected. Its set to run on both kids accounts with full rights, but they cant even access the main GUI with the way I have it configured without a password. I figured this would allow Avast to do its job while keeping them from allowing something malicious. I used PrevX SOL and stepped up the settings to guard every HTTP and HTTPS site they go to as well as added the banking site they use. ClearCloud DNS is implemented through the router so who ever connects is atleast somewhat protected. I configured MBAM and Avast for weekly scans at night when everyone is sleeping.

 

Avira isn't a problem that way with heuristics at the default (medium) settings where I have it. Although all the users I know report no such problems at the max settings in "real world" use. whitedragon551's developed a good setup though.

 

DefenseWall with some sensitive files secured and password protected. A free AV and either ClearCloud or Norton DNS. I would also recommend something like WOT for the browser.

 

I'm sure medium setting is perfect. I have used Avira for 3 years now and always had it set on high and only had 2 or 3 false positives in 3 years. And I install many different programs and browse the net heavily. But then again maybe I'm just lucky.

You could use a limited user account with a free antivirus such as Avira or Avast. It is also depend on what the kids do on the computer.

 

I installed Shadow Defender on my Grand kids computer after having to re-install windows after trojans brought the computer to its knees. The kids are instructed to open SD every time they start the computer with the intent to go on the internet. A year has gone by and no infections. Avast and Malwarebytes scans turn up nothing. Grandpa is happy.

 

Thats what I started doing when my 9 year old wants to play addicting games on my laptop. Shadowdefender goes on and I really don't have to worry too much.

Is Prevx password protected as well?

 

No it is not. I have it hidden in the tray so the icon doesnt show up and its inaccessible from the start menu to the LUA.

Forticlient has proved in several tests to have awful detection rates.

This is exactly why is near improssible to get real advice on security software on these forums, people just recommend what they use, not what the person needs.

 

Comodo Internet Security with D+, Firewall and Antivirus alerts suppressed and password protected. Also have the sandbox set to block and enable cloud scanning.

 

The kids that don't game, Linux. Youngset is 16yo, right?

The kids that have to absolutely game on a PC & not a separate console (prefered). Limited accounts, absolutely no access to admin pw.

Make the kids learn about computer online safety. Don't let them have access till they understand & implement the basics. And never give them root & or admin PWs. Make the PWs hard, not birthdays, anniv etc.

Or, if you prefer totally free, Returnil Free, also password protected.

 

I think any of the top 5 antivirus out there will do, paid or free...as long as it has password protection so they can't change the settings.

Make admin acct password protected so they couldn't be able to acces and change some settings in it.

Let the kids use only the limited acct.

There are some software programs out there w/ parental control, so they couldn't access pornographic sites. (But some porn sites are becoming wiser these days, they are doing their best to slip through to it).

With firefox browser have the WOT addons, at least it blocks and gives warnings to some dangerous sites. Also Adblock plus, AntiSocial, BetterPrivacy, and No FB Tracking especially if they're visiting Facebook.

DefenseWall Personal Firewall is also a good choice for making those untrusted vulnerable programs isolated facing the internet, it has very few or almost no annoying pop-ups that could possibly make an 8 yr young child irritated and wonders w/c one to click.

Best of all, instruct them how to use pc and what sites to visit, what to do if something happens, tell them to ask you if they couldn't figure out something, etc... ....remember that kids listen and has the memory that has a lot more faster than what was installed in the pc ram.

If your house if really full of kids, then I suggest you to have two pc. One for you and the other one for the kids...w the above mentioned suggestions. Or else you'll suffer the consequences unless those kids are of very good soft natured.

Great setup. I think you are about as gold as you're going to get. I have OpenDNS on our boxes at home, as well as LUA with locked down Avast and ThreatFire, and haven't had any issues with my kids, (17, 11, 9). I personally think that PrevX is overkill, but have no problem with installing it as you have.

A partition with Ubutu, and your windows partition with password, so they can only use Linux.

Use chrome as a browser on all, it is the safest around

On the main install Avira free with file, network and mail shield plus Avast sandbox on "auto" and PrevX Safe Online Facebook (free version). It problably is the strongest PC with the most modern OS, so use Windows7 UAC and add EMET2 for extra hardening. Password protect Avast. Use solid Paragon free imaging and syncback free for image and data backup.

On the others install Comodo time machine, add PrevX Safe Online Facebook and set heuristics to high and apply after age/population. Set Age/Population to medium. Add Hitman Pro to scan daily. When HMP or PrevX tell you are infected, just roll back with CTM.

Starting life with Avast 4.8 .. Now up to Avast 6.

Avast is the only one that I've found works extremely well for both me with my Laptop - & - My 14 year old son on his Desktop

I'd recommend you Chrome with Adblock Plus (Malware domain list) and WOT (Chrome has a nice antiphising) and Avira free. I've always found Avast heuristic too permisive.... (if your kids like to visit dark side: keygens, cracks, etc...).
