Yeah. I second that. A lot of users are still in XP and it's firewall really is not good. You'd have to know also what to set-up and check and for the not so knowledgeable in firewalls..it's not user friendly. On a lighter note if you are not carefull you'll also end up answering "yes/allow" to all of the firewall blocks so would be better to try to learn more as you use one(ask and ask/read guides etc..)

 

In my opinion, common sense is highly over-rated, particularly in an environment where more "legitimate" sites are sporting vulnerabilities than porn sites. Common sense, in fact, is probably exactly what the more adept social engineers are counting on when they devise their malicious schemes. Uncommon sense is what is needed nowadays.

I really don't understand why winrar still lacks digital sign, the program is paid, and a certificate would be cheap compared all licenses they sell in a month.

 

Thanks for all the help. I've installed Avast Free, Comodo and AdBlock into Firefox (with the Malware domain list). I've told them to let me know how it goes so I might end up trying something else.

 

After I posted above, I came across a keylogger thread (16k.exe) that I could *not* configure Comodo, on the netbook, to block (even using all the tips in that thread). I then ran it on my desktop and OA blocked it right away. Even after clicking allow a few times, OA kept warning me each time. Finally, when the program finally ran, it logged just one keystroke before (I assume) OA blocked the keys from being picked up...no further keypresses registered. Needless to say, I removed Comodo and installed OA w/Avast 6.

16K is digitally signed under comodo's trust vendor list. If you don't mind the pop ups, you can set D+ to paranoid. It does catch it then.

 

Good grief, this forum is sure bad at spreading bad info around here lately.
I personally run XP with windows firewall,never an issue,period and so do alot of other people with no issues.

 

I deleted vendor.n and unchecked all "phone home" checking...it still got through (not on paranoid though, but that wasn't supposedly needed). It's log had an entry that it was checked in the cloud and found safe...so maybe it's seen once and allowed forever after? I don't know, OA gave me a "warmer fuzzy" with no configuration. I do appreciate Comodo offering all that they do for free though.

About the XP firewall, that is my opinion about it (and so as mantra's). Seems "you" and a "lot of people with no issues" are knowledgeable of what to "set-up/check". BUT hey... not all are like you guru....some are beginners, some are still learners, some have a hard time understanding firewallls so they ask and ask for ideas, tips etc.

Maybe in your area or place a lot of people know what to set-up/check. BUT I also believe that given a choice of using the XP firewall or a third party one... a lot here will choose 3rd party. Even those who know what to check/set-up also choose 3rd party for XP.

Hey it was clearly stated there....."You'd have to know...." so it means that those who do not know (or don't like the XP firewall)....

Some do not have your knowledge of setting-up/checking the XP firewall so for them it's a third-party firewall for them..(some want a install-leave it kind..it's there preference...and to some third party firewalls are more user-friendly or customizable than the XP built-in..like Privatefirewall actually it's a very nice firewall.)

I am not spreading bad info here. Wow, that was way off bound, imho. I am simply stating my observation and opinion as with all those who share some tips/insights on the topic. If Privatefirewall was in the selection I'd have shared some observations as I am using it in an XP SP3 pc I have. And a lot like Privatefirewall.

Make sure to uncheck the below options -

"Automatically Scan unrecognized files in the cloud" and
"Perform cloud based behavior on unrecognized files"

Before testing make sure you don't have entries in trusted files. Because when it scans in the cloud and found to be safe, it will be automatically added Trusted Files list. This is all just to increase the usability by decrease amount of interaction with the user. At the same time it is doing good job of maintaining security.

37 megs for cmdagent...i guess its the AV which is consuming...

for me its (cmdagent.exe - 3 MB, cfp - 4 MB)..

I have it with AV and it's not going above 10k for both processes , when AV is updating it may go up to 25-27k but then quickly drops down below 10k.

 

The XP FW can be properly configured so that it won't suck...
Search for relevant Threads...

 

never find a good configuration for xp firewall
it can't block outbound connection , i can block only incoming connection

Yap. Even if it's free if it just slowed down your system then better put it aside and use the built-in firewall. Especially if your net connection is slow then don't use third party firewall...cz it'll just slows down your browsing more. How much more if your pc is already sluggish. It'll just hug your machines like what a bear does.

By the way, if those mentioned 2 above gives you more problems than pleasure then u can try DefenseWall Personal Firewall and check for yourself what it does. It's a HIPS and a firewall in one but its simplicity is genius.
