Try it. It's free to do. It does not make sense to buy it first. The program is fairly light weight, but does use a good deal of disk io. Regarding the firewall, I still believe a router + Windows FW is perfectly fine. I could care less about a suites firewall.

That's just part of the update process, it's nothing to worry about.

Open Avast! and go to Settings > Status Bar and uncheck the box next to the IM shield to stop monitoring it, this will stop the icon changing if you disable it.

I don't believe there is a way to remove the context menu scan option within avast, although i'm sure you can edit the registry to remove it if you really want to.

I haven't used the mail shield before so I wouldn't have a clue, sorry :doubt:

What's new in this beta build 986
pretty much all the bugs from the previous beta builds should be solved now, with the following exceptions:
    - Firewall: uTorrent conflict not yet fully resolved
    - Firewall: packet rules for applications still don't support ASK and AUTO-DECIDE actions properly.
    - Incorrect context-menu handling in SafeZone
    - Other small visual issues in SafeZone

What's new in this beta build 989
    - improved update from v5.x (Security Center registration, installation of WebRep plugins, installation of the gadget, ...)
    - improvements in the SafeZone (e.g. the Turn off command on 64-bit Windows, flash in the SafeZone browser , Alt+Tab processing etc)
    - fixes in the gadget (especially on Vista)
    - Welcome screen not shown by default anymore
    - fixes in the Outlook plugin

Note: WebRep is currently available only for IE and Firefox (Chrome is coming soon).

It's used for the persistent cache feature.

    What's the problem with that?

Why is this a problem? A journal is a volume-related structure, not OS related.
I.e. the journal on any volume is accessible from any instance of Windows (booting from any volume).

It makes no difference if you use Ubuntu next to WIndows or you use BSD or Solaris. Journals are NTFS specific and it makes absolutelly no difference to other operating systems. They just don't use it.

Disable Transient and Persistent caching under shield settings. But expect severe slowdowns when disabling this. I don't think you'll see any special benefit for other operating systems. That's why i see doing this as a rather pointless thing.
