    Installed the update. Out with the old, in with the new.

    New is running sweet and true. To Greg Salvato & the folks at Privacyware -- THANKS!

    Thanks for the info. Could never get PFW to work with Geswall but it works great with Sanboxie.

    off topic, but may I ask about :

    Advanced Options on drop my rights

    -------taken from the link:------
    The arguments to DropMyRights are:
    Copy

    DropMyRights {path} [N|C|U]
    ----------------------------------

    how to use it? just add at the endo_O

    sry again for the off topic , but I tried to follow bellgamin examples while using private firewall :D

    Here is the way I did it.

    1- I establish a folder named "DropMyRights"

    2- I downloaded dropmyrights.msi from HERE -- it's an installer.

    3- I executed dropmyrights.msi & caused it to install the execution file (dropymyrights.exe) into the "DropMyRights" folder I established in step #1.

    4- I selected the apps that I wanted to run under DropMyRights (DMR). I will use browser Firefox as an example. In this example, the folders I used are:

    dropmyrights.exe was in folder - C:\Program Files\DropMyRights\DropMyRights.exe

    firefox.exe was in folder - C:\Program Files\Firefox\firefox.exe

    5- I created a shortcut to firefox.exe and put it into the "DropMyRights" folder.

    6- I right-clicked the Firefox shortcut and clicked Properties

    7- On the Properties menu, in the box entitled "Target" I entered . . .

    "C:\Program Files\DropMyRights\DropMyRights.exe" "C:\Program Files\Firefox\firefox.exe"

    8- On the Properties menu, in the box entitled "Start in" I entered . . .

    "C:\Program Files\DropMyRights"

    9- I renamed the Firefox shortcut to "Firefox (safe)"
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    I repeated steps 4 through 9 for each internet facing app that I regularly use. Once I did the first DMR shortcut (the one for Firefox), I was able to do the rest of the DMR shortcuts simply by cut&paste into each application's "regular" shortcut.
    On Process Explorer's Properties tab for (e.g.) Firefox, the entry for BUILTIN\Administrators should read "Deny. Owner". If not, something is wrong.
    Could be -- I do not use 64-bit as yet so I have no experience as to what does & doesn't run therewith.
    Such being the case, there is another way. . .
    1- Run Process Explorer (PE)
    2- Click "File" in upper left corner of PE -- gives you a drop-down menu
    3- Click "Run as limited user" on the drop-down menu
    4- Follow the resultant instructions.
    This discussion is really going far afield from Privatefirewall.
    Perhaps a separate thread on DMR would be more appropriate.
    Latest version is very annoying under W7 32 bit .
    Uninstalled the previous after saving settings and then installed the new one.The next day it asked me at every restart about some files located on a DVD Drive which was empty :) .I have a dual boot so i restart depending on what i need .Even after clicking the tab so it can remember it kept poping them up for another restart.Then its started showing a dialog over the clock with the Alow (countdown) for something related.Last time i inserted a disc in that drive was maybe 2 weeks ago :)
    I m starting do dislike it and the Alow countdown is unsafe.
    Also it pops something right before the PC shutdown/restart ,i never see what exactly asks about :)
    It`s very annoying under Windows 7 64bit too. I had a lot of pop ups from Microsoft processes starting up. Wmp, snipping tool, trusted installer etc. I emailed support and they told me that this is normal, but I have never experienced this with pfw before the latest release.
    It might be normal for this version of PF. But it is getting annoying and tonight it stopped Outlook.exe running more than one send/receive.:eek:
    Every system and setup is different. It's actually very common for one person to have zero issues, and another to have problems. Happens every day, just check the posts around here.... :)
    Re:Issues with PF
    I do find that I have to "Allow All" for everything in Process Monitor/Applications, or they don't run smoothly- I still get alerts, so it seems to be protecting.
    Gary at PF support filters everything, but I wouldn't call him a "normal" user.
    BTW- I surf 99% using free sandboxie (virtual...), so I don't worry much.
    Re: Issues with PF
    PFW's Process Monitor (HIPS) affords good protection against 0-day threats -- if it is set to "Filter".
    Took the plunge and installed PF. Finally working under LUA :D
    Question though is does it protect during boot? I get the impression that it doesn't cos when I hover over the tray icon at login I get this image:
    A software firewall cannot protect *anything* until its service process is loaded. That limitation is not unique to PFW. For example, read HERE concerning a related issue with Outpost FW.
    A firewall's service process is set to load early, but that does not guarantee that it will be first to load because other security apps also compete for early load. The firewall may or may not win that "competition."
    In my case, I have an NAT/SPI router so I have protection on incoming no matter what.
    Another option is to not power up your modem until after your FW is up & running.
    AFAIK OSSS (FW + HIPS) is the only security app that protects even before Windows gets going. I *think* OSSS does this by using the MBR to get itself going.
    OSSS is not free but it does have a free trial. If you decide to give OSSS a trial, I recommend that -- before testing OSSS -- you make an image of your system disk. Restoring an image is by far THE surest & safest way to uninstall OSSS (or any major security app).
    Online Armor paid versions and Look`n`Stop offer to block all traffic as Windows gets going, but probably not before. (In LnS it's a hidden beta option). I would expect other paid firewalls to offer the same protection since spambots and trojans can send out lots of info during that small window when the computer boots and connects to the internet but the firewall hasn't loaded yet. (And same thing is possible during shutdown).
    In fact, the lack of that feature is a big drawback of PFW imo (which I still use because it's so light).
    If anyone knows of a free app for blocking startup traffic, or a mini firewall with that feature, or just a program that disables network connection during shutdown, and re-enables them after startup, after the firewall is up, please let me know?
    Hi mr.bell :D
    Sry I'll go off topic again, since u always have an interesting idea
    From what I learn from OSSS sites, they had anti virus/malware module too
    So I want to make sure... Is it a full suite or I can use it with my current anti virus/malware (EAM)o_O
    Thx in advance
    I don't know what exactly we can extrapolate from that thread at this point.
    I installed the most recent version (over the previous) on my wife's computer and have had absolutely no issues. She is using XP Pro SP3 much like one individual in the other thread.
    Perhaps something else may be the culprit?
    I just don't think it's possible to generalize at this juncture though it is certainly something to keep an eye out for.
