Indeed. It seems that many people -- most, perhaps -- still think like that famous dog, notwithstanding copious contrary evidence. That attitude arguably accounts for the limited interest in privacy and anonymity methods, and services such as VPNs and encrypted email.

I'm reminded of attitudes in the mid 80s to HIV and safe sex. There was considerable denial, even among promiscuous straights, because "it can't happen here".

Anyway, I'm resisting the temptation to write yet another mini FAQ. And, in any case, I'd be preaching to the choir.

 

Holy crap
Now this is serious IMO.

 

The world's population increasingly gaining online access + governments/law enforcement desperation to tout security and safety, and, to control information=loss of privacy AND security. It's not a difficult equation. The Internet is a tool, not just a gigantic movie theater/radio/ game system. Every tool ever made has had good and bad uses. A hammer can build a house, it can also kill a person. The internet can put us in contact with just about every human on the Earth, and can bring us information in seconds that, until it existed, took travel and sometimes years to acquire. It can also be used to spy on us and deliver destructive digital weapons that can bring down both Uncle Bobs emailing machine and entire corporations.

The Internet is an overwhelmingly powerful creation, both in the right, and wrong hands. There should be no shock, outrage, or surprise. Nothing is going on that hasn't gone on for thousands of years. The Internet simply made things laughably easier.

 

This is nothing new. There have been several people convicted of 1st degree murder where their Internet search history was introduced as evidence at trial. I can think of one guy in particular that killed his wife. The physical evidence was sparse, but when the prosecutor showed he had been doing google searches for "how to kill and get away with it," it was enough for the jury to convict.

This Loughner case is not the first by any means.
