here..although i have to say that all the live metrics read/write io, cpu time, etc is sort of useless out of context (i.e. looking at a screenshot)

    fsecure.png

this machine just booted, and it's running f-secure is 2011

ye, thx for the screenshot anyways tho

i decided to uninstall avast since ever since installing avast pro version over the free one i had been using, my system was experiencing frequent BSOD's so i figured, might as well kill 2 birds with 1 stone, so i uninstalled Avast Pro and install Fsecure AV

now ill be able to see how light fsecure is and ill know if the BSOD issue really was avast pro :D

but i have another question, does F-Secure AV include a web scanner?

ok, well WOW does FSecure AV have an incredibly high IO Reads, all combined aprox. 14,500,000!!! IO writes arent rediculously high, but still not very good at around 50-60,000

i turned the system on, went and took a shower, got back and those were the stats, and they stay consistantly...

aprox 158,000,000 bytes for reads... and maybe 30,000,000 bytes on writes

I have NEVER seen an AV with such rediculously high IO usage...

which process? fssm32.exe? that's the scanner manager. if it didn't read (in this case, appx 158MB...) then it wouldn't be scanning stuff. after i booted my machine to take the screenshot i sent, it performed a scheduled scan..reading 21,000,000,000 bytes. orrrrr...19.5GB. which makes sense, since it just scanned some stuff.

im not entirely sure if ur defending it or against it but its a rediculously high amount for not doing anything...

i just think fretting over insignificant amounts of disk IO is silly. 158 million bytes is approximately 150MB. a midrange SATA disk can read 150MB at full bore in around 3 seconds.

as far as i see it, your pc booted, it loaded some services, started f-secure, then other things probably loaded which caused f-secure to scan them. 150MB worth of things (158,000,000 bytes)

the IO usage stays the same after my system being idle for a few hours...

and its bad when on battery life, or gaming or other hard drive intensive tasks, i really dont see why an AV needs that much disk access when ive never seen any other AV need that much.

That's a lot. The only other AV I have seen that high is Vipre.

i think i remember something a while ago about how having hte option of blocking cookies significantly increase the programs resource usage so im gunn try disabling that, then wait a while and check back on the usage.

but man, thumbs up to F-Secure, they know customer service, i submitted 2 FP's and within 5 minutes they emailed me back saying they had analyzed the files and deemed that they are indeed safe and issued an update soon after, now thats impressive response time, i might stick with f-secure simply due to this kind of customer service :)

well disabling cookie blocking didnt do much, but it did seem to make firefox run a bit more smoothly

and so does F-Secure Antivirus have a webshield, or HTTP scanner of some sort?

I have been using for years now only avast, then f-secure and now switched back to avast. regarding f-secure, only the internet security has a web shield and a http scanner (the later being off by default). f-secure feels heavier than avast and the ram usage is twice as high (not that is matters in our days). I replaced f-secure because when playing large wmv files, it scans like crazy and the computer becomes unresponsives. I remain a big fan of f-secure, but avast is still slightly better.

ye thats about how i feel, F-Secure is light, but its disk usage is wayyyy to high, it creates a slugishness when opening things, and moving around the harddrive, as well as loading in games, its unfortunate since i really liked it

In regards to the PrevX and F Secure issue Ive been facing:

I did a little troubleshooting on my own.

I uninstalled PrevX with Your Uninstaller.
I uninstalled F Secure with Your uninstaller.
I ran the PrevX Force Uninstall tool for remaining traces.
    Rebooted.
Cleaned out the %appdata% local and roaming, %programdata%, %temp%, and checked out Program Files and Program Files (x86) for left over traces.
    Ran CCleaner.
    Rebooted.
Reinstalled with F Secure first this time and PrevX SOL after.
    Still not fixed.

I added PrevX folder to F Secures Object list under Virus and Spyware Scan, Excluded Items List, Objects, ProgramFiles/PrevX folder. And voila no more DeepGuard prompts.

    Hello guys,

Would like to ask anyone that has used the AV version only of F-secure 2011 - I noticed that the program files folder of F-secure is over 700 MB after just 2 days usage! I noticed also that in the folder there are modules and files belonging to the IS version like firewall components, internet shield etc.
Also I see in the task manager fsdfwd.exe which is described as "internet shield daemon" while in the AV version there is no internet shield.
Also I noticed that the program installed updates to IDS which has nothing to do with the AV only version.
Also in the "non plug-and-play drivers" section of the Device manager, F-secure firewall driver installed. Why is this necessary?

    Is this normal?

The installer package is the same for both AV and IS as I recall, it is your activation code that decides which product is to be installed.

I guess it installs everything that is necessary should you decide to upgrade to IS even though you have an AV activation code. Perhaps both uses some of the modules therefore they have to be installed.

You have asked the same question in the F-Secure forum, maybe MJ-per Comp or someone at F-Secure can shed some light on the question.

    Regards,
    Joakim

Thanks very much for clarifying. I thought so but wasn't sure.
