Hello all. I have been reading wilderssecurityforums for quite a time and recently I registered to it.
So, I want to say that I am a security conscious guy and specially when it comes to my e-mail accounts.
So, I was just wondering that is it safe to use Pidgin or Trillion as my messenger program??
Also, are programs like Yahoo messenger and gtalk are safe as wello_O?
    Thanks.

Pidgin is perfectly fine. It's open-source and has support for OTR messaging (encrypted messages). I don't know about Trillian, but I suspect it's OK. I wouldn't use Yahoo or MSN's messengers because Pidgin and other clients support all those protocols anyway.

IMO, you can't use anything without some tension... ;) But if used with a reasonable amount of care, Pidgin is a decent messenger app that is maintained on a current basis.

Beyond that, keep your PC, antivirus, firewall and Pidgin up to date. And don't open unknown files, trust unknown links in messages and so forth. If you do this, your tension should be @ a minimum. :)

    What is "safe to use"?
Do you mean are they secure as in hidden backdoor?
Yes, as long as you keep the updated.

    Privacy?
Depends on the protocol you use, is it end to end encrypted, is it routed through a central server or worse, is it plain text?
    Use OTR

    Anonymity? (actually Pseudonymity)
Tunnel through a VPN or Tor.

I would vote for Pidgin and OTR too... one thing you might want to think about is the webmail you use. You might want to set up a clean email to use with Pidgin only. Never add any profile information and never send or receive an email. Using something like Shadow Defender helps too.
