LNS & Win7FW

Is there any advantage to running LNS and Win 7 Firewall at the same time? I have both but am not sure what gain, if any, there is by having them run together.

I am assuming LSN gives me better outbound connection control and WFW takes care of the inbound side, or do I have that wrong?

If I do run them together should I leave the the LSN Driver active or should I clear the tick mark for the LSN driver in the "Local Area Connection Properties" setup box?

You should NEVER run more then 1 software firewall on one computer. Your just asking for issues if you do that. If you want multiple layers of protection the best way would be to invest in a Router. This would offer another physical layer of inbound protection. An additional plus would be to invest in one that offers SPI (although I think all home routers have that now).

 

Thank you for your reply. I have been running it for about a week now without any problem. At home I am behind an SPI/Firewall router. However, when I am traveling I am not and using open VPN. connection. What prompted me to do this were posts here saying WFW can be run concurrently with LSN, Outpost, etc... I think there were 7 well known firewalls that can be used with win7 WFW for more granularity.

Look ‘n’ Stop and Windows built-in firewall can coherently run together, but I think it’s pointless, Look 'n’ Stop is a extremely strong packet-filtering system. Anyways, if packet-filtering is enabled on the Windows firewall, you may have to maintain both packet filters.

 

Thanks PhantOm, I suspected as much... my particular interest is when I am travelling and using a vpn on Wifi in hotels and hotspots and if WFW would give me a little more inbound protection. I am using your LSNRlsDelux.

 

How do you figure Windows FW gives better inbound protection? It really comes down to the time you want to spending configuring LnS. Its by far one of the strongest FW's Ive used.

Windows Filtering Platform does not support MAC-level filtering. Windows 7 firewall would not any inbound protection more than LNS on Wi-Fi.

No question LNS is a top notch FW and I am far from being an "expert." That is why I use Phant0m rules set. However, when reading some of the post by those more knowledgeable (Stem, et al), there seems much to be said for WIN7's FW. FWIW It is the only other firewall I have found besides LNS and passes the "Shields Up" port sheathing "out of the box" when using OpenVPN. All the others I have tried leave ports open and leak all over the place. Not perfect by any means.
