I wrote a simple Task Manager in Excel/VBA: list processes, terminate, suspend and resume.

It can be useful when fighting malware that prevents you from using Task Manager or Process Explorer.

It uses the macro capabilities built into Excel. If you don't use Excel, your chances of running it successfully are reduced...

I tested it with OO 3.3 and is does not run. So I would say Excel is the only spreadsheet app that will run it.

 

That's no surprise, I call the WIN32 API in VBA, AFAIK there are no other spreadsheet programs that support this.

it only works with excel - wth i need 100s of megs to run a small taskmanager?

It does not offer even close the features as process explorer, process hacker,
AnVir nor System Explorer - and all of them are much smaller

Very much missing the point. This comes in very handy when you're locked out of task manager or any other system exploer. For those of us that have seen malware lock up task manager, this is very helpful.
To make such a inflammatory comment to someone that is trying to contribute a piece of work is childish.
As far as needing exel is concerned, you can't tell me that the majority of folks computers that we work on don't have office.

 

For those of us with some experience in how malware behaves, this particular contribution to the community here at Wilders, is immensely appreciated.

 

This is a great idea and one that should be expanded further, in my opinion. Many infections block core components from many AVs from starting and this can be used to regain control of the system.

Do I see the next version of a Combofix-esque product coming through Microsoft Excel?

 

I like it for being a task manager implemented in Excel but I wouldn't really use it. A lot of the malware I'm looking at now try and prevent everything from starting or soon end it and I have different option for those. Didier, you got too much time on your hands

 

i have to buy MS Office to run this ??

good idea.. plz develop it ,such that it can be used with all spreadsheets..

 

It's using Win APIs. Therefore MS Excel is used.

 

maybe the mass dont know how about others. i have stopped using MS Office
with version 2003, that is an old one. tried v2007 in a sandbox - dropped dead.
never had v2010. The point for me was that i wont install around 1-1.5 gigs
for a stupid table or a simple letter - other solutions can do that smaller.
MS Office got really bloated and the handling with the ribbon bar is for those
who are new to office, but nothing for experienced users.
the comparable office to 2003 for me is now SoftMaker Office 2010. and
its closer to docx than openoffice which ever had really problems to show
my documents correctly - Softmaker can do.
on work we have MS office components, but i dont need it at home - like
most of the users. and there is no need for me to carry home some work.
furthermore i never wont put MS Office on my home computer.

sure, excel will clean up the system - pump it up
there is only ONE solution for an infected system - and its not Excel.

PS this is my personal opinion - i dont need to share yours so vice versa.
any kind of coding is work, sometimes hard work, investigating much time
to get something proper working. but sometimes there is no need to reinvent the wheel

 

I'm sure you know this is free software, you don't have to pay for it, we don't have a contract and I can decide freely how I "waste" my time.
